Style: English Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Candi Stout is our fusion of a Belgian dark ale and a classic stout. A rich blend of roasted malts is blended with cocoa nibs and candi syrup (traditionally used in Belgian abbey ales) during brewing resulting in a wonderfully drinkable stout with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and a hint of sweetness. A surprisingly light mouthfeel and effervescent carbonation deliver a sessionable drinkability not often found in stouts today.

On tap at the House of Brews. Black body. Smells of roasted malt and a touch of dark fruit. Tastes of dark fruit and an aggressive roasted malt flavor. Bananas and light spice from the yeast. Back end is dry, though still tastes like chocolate. Light body and very drinkable. Excellent all around.

ommegang can do no wrong, i love their beer and i love their role in the american craft scene, which has been bringing traditional belgian beer styles into popular beer culture here, innovating within a cool set of boundaries, and staying inspired by the old world, giving attention to styles that deserve it but might not have stayed relevant without them. this beer is a great example of that, a belgian dark ale inspired stout, which has some of that chateau abbey malt and candy sugar flavor among the more traditional dark stout maltiness. roast and coffee and baking chocolate abound in nose and flavor, properly bitter but with that belgian strong ale sweetness to it as well, a cool way to balance those darker elements without the more common and sometimes one dimensional caramel malt middle, i love it. good complexity here, not quite as belgian yeast driven as i usually expect from these guys, but its there in part, more about the malt here than the yeast though for sure. i love the richness for the modest abv, and the higher carbonation is awesome too. it fades slowly at the finish, not sugary or dry, just sort of lingering awhile. really pleasant beer, uniquely and expertly made like all of the ommegang stuff. still one of my favorite breweries anywhere!

not the Saison that I ordered but was pleased. Really like Belgian dark ales, not overly fond of stouts. This was a delicious blend. Nice hints of chocolate and coffee with out smacking you in the head. Overall, next time I may ask for it.

On tap. Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of roast coffee, chocolate and sugary sweetness. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt flavor with some maple notes.

This one is going to be in my top 5 for a Stout style beer! First of all the appearance is spot on. It's a good dark chocolate brown color with a thick full head. The head hangs on well and a light swirl of the glass rejuvenates the foam leaving cool lace like patterns on the glass. The nose offers loads of sweet bready malts and smooth sweet caramel notes blending with dark chocolate bitterness. In the background are very light hints of hops anda slite kiss alcohol. The flavor is pleasantly sweet up front with a nice mix the roasted malt, Belgian candi sugar and classic Ommegang ale yeast. As it lingers on the palate the darker roasted malt and bitter cocoa flavors take over. The hops add a touch of complementary bitterness as well and this helps to remind you that this is not just a wonderful liquid dessert but a well balanced dark Belgian Stout beer.

L - Deep, almost black with slight hints of glowing dark brown around the edges. Pours with a very large (almmost excessively large) tan/brown head that sticks around and leaves lacing behind.
S - Tons of sweet malt and yeast up front with very slight notes of semisweet chocolate and caramel. Slight earthiness too the smell as well.
T - Follows the nose: Tons of sweet malt and yeast up front with notes of chocolate intermixed. The chocolate isn't particularly strong, but enough to let you know it's there. Dried dark fruits and caramel follow behind along with slight notes of earth and hops. Quite a bit of sweetness from the candi sugar and only a slight hint of roastiness.
F - light to medium bodied with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. A little too light and too carbonated for a stout in my opinion but nothing too off-putting in terms of "feel".
O - This is an interesting Belgian-style stout (what else can you expect from Ommegang right?). It's got some good complex flavor going on but the flavors were shocking at first because I thought this was going to be a rich, heavy, decadent dessert stout. Instead, I found it to be a unique Belgian-style stout with complexities of sweet malt, heavy yeast, notes of chocolate and caramel along with notes of earth and hops tied together with a candy sweetness and a light but nearly heavily carbonated body. Interesting and well worth a try.

Ommegang Candi Stout 6.9% ABV. Pours black with a one finger tan head. Nose is slightly sweet caramel, pretty much no flavor, no bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall excellent.
