Brewery Ommegang
New York, United States

Style: English Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Candi Stout is our fusion of a Belgian dark ale and a classic stout. A rich blend of roasted malts is blended with cocoa nibs and candi syrup (traditionally used in Belgian abbey ales) during brewing resulting in a wonderfully drinkable stout with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and a hint of sweetness. A surprisingly light mouthfeel and effervescent carbonation deliver a sessionable drinkability not often found in stouts today.

Pours a deep chocolate brown with a thick one and a half finger beige head atop, that settles nicely into a frothy mass after quite some time.Mild yeast phenols and dark roast coffee in the nose, not real big in the aroma department. The feel has a whipped 'airy' lightness to it wich is very nice.More earthy and roasted on the palate, there is some chocolate but it's of the dark bitter variety, very drinkable. The name might be a little misleading, there is candied sugar yes but it's on the drier side...wich isn't bad by any means.

This one is going to be in my top 5 for a Stout style beer! First of all the appearance is spot on. It's a good dark chocolate brown color with a thick full head. The head hangs on well and a light swirl of the glass rejuvenates the foam leaving cool lace like patterns on the glass. The nose offers loads of sweet bready malts and smooth sweet caramel notes blending with dark chocolate bitterness. In the background are very light hints of hops anda slite kiss alcohol. The flavor is pleasantly sweet up front with a nice mix the roasted malt, Belgian candi sugar and classic Ommegang ale yeast. As it lingers on the palate the darker roasted malt and bitter cocoa flavors take over. The hops add a touch of complementary bitterness as well and this helps to remind you that this is not just a wonderful liquid dessert but a well balanced dark Belgian Stout beer.

not the Saison that I ordered but was pleased. Really like Belgian dark ales, not overly fond of stouts. This was a delicious blend. Nice hints of chocolate and coffee with out smacking you in the head. Overall, next time I may ask for it.

Brewery Ommegang "Candi Stout"
750 ml brown glass bottle , corked and caged
$8.49 @ Cherry Hill Wine, Liquor & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Impressive appearance. A delicate pour brought up a two-finger thick head of creamy tan foam over a brown-black body that displays dark mahogany highlights when held to the light. The aroma is stout-like with notes of dark chocolate and roastiness but there's also some light phenolics and a bit of clove, and I guess even some mild caramelish sugar. It's not candyish or sweet though, although I think the little bit of clove from the yeast sends your mind in that direction. On to the flavor... well, chocolatey' the label did state "Stout brewed with Cocoa Nibs and Candi Sugar", but it's not massive chocolate though, not like a dessert beer, just enough that it's the first thing you get, and roastiness and Belgian yeast character and dark skinned fruitiness (mainly plum) follows that. The caramel side is fuller than the aroma suggests, but not by much, and the sugary quality remains, as does the clove-like phenol, and a bit of spiciness from the yeast as well. A median bitterness backs it and it finishes with some sweetness but it's far from "sweet", and it can change from sip to sip but you might find lingering chocolate, or spiciness, or even some earthy and leafy hops in the finish. I thought it would be more of a dessert beer given the name but it's really not, it's just a solid Belgian-style stout with a little bit of extra chocolate added. Could you use it as a dessert beer? Yes, depending on what you paired it with, but you could also use an English-style Imperial stout, which reminds me, how strong is this?... 6.7% ABV, that's not bad. Some American stouts go up to 7% or higher. So what to say, I'm not sure, but let me tie up the loose ends first... medium-light in body and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation - ahh, yes, there's plenty of yeast in the bottom of the bottle so I assume it's at least partially bottle-conditioned. Overall it's a solid beer straight across the board. Nicely balanced and well made. Certainly worth trying for fans of the style.

On tap at the House of Brews. Black body. Smells of roasted malt and a touch of dark fruit. Tastes of dark fruit and an aggressive roasted malt flavor. Bananas and light spice from the yeast. Back end is dry, though still tastes like chocolate. Light body and very drinkable. Excellent all around.

Pours a blackish color with a light brown airy head. Some spotty lacing on the glass.

The aroma is musty from the yeast. Some dark fruit notes; prune and fig.

The taste is of a moderate roast and chocolate. A bit of char. Sweet candi sugar. Some prune and other dark fruits.

The feel is moderate with prickly carbonation. Sweet and bitter on the palate; finishes chalky dry.

A nice stout. Good mix of Belgian yeast and candi sugar with the roasted barley/malt. A bit too dry.

Ommegang Candi Stout 6.9% ABV. Pours black with a one finger tan head. Nose is slightly sweet caramel, pretty much no flavor, no bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

L: Poured from a bottle to pint glass. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and an opaque consistency. There was a half inch of creamy, tan-colored, somewhat long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A solid aroma of roasted malt, candi sugar, dark chocolate, and dark fruit.

T: Tasted of a mild shot of hops (mostly in the finish), lots of burnt sugar (the dominant ingredient), some dark chocolate, a good amount of roasted malt, and light dark fruit notes (plums, in particular). An interesting flavor that gets better as you go along. Subtle. The addition of the candi sugar is an interesting one.

F: A solid amount of carbonation with a dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: One of the more interesting English stouts I've tried. Drinkable.
