473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jan 15 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a dark black-brown cola colour - seems opaque at a glance, but holding it to the light reveals its clarity and reddish-burgundy highlights. Situated atop is just over two fingers of fluffy, foamy, buff-coloured head that wilts over the next five-plus minutes, whittled down to a creamy cap and collar. A thick band of lacing sticks to the glass, too - looks great to me. Rich, malty aroma with some roastiness - I'm getting coffee, cocoa, roasted grains, toasted bread and a hint of toffee.
A tasty & straightforward porter that leans toward the dry side. Roasty flavours, with black coffee, dark chocolate and roasted grains doing most of the heavy lifting; minor hints of cocoa powder and toffee nearer the finish. Roasty aftertaste with coffee grounds that fade quickly, leaving the palate dry. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some bite to this porter's relatively smooth mouthfeel; easy drinking, and quite more-ish (i.e. the finish of the last sip really makes me want to take another).
Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. Tolpuddle Porter isn't spectacular, but it's good enough to keep me satisfied for the duration of the glass. I do like the dry & roasty finish, but the overall flavour profile is not particularly unique or noteworthy. I think it's pretty close to a coinflip between Tolpuddle and 4PM Sunset - they're both good-not-great brews, but 4PM might have a slight edge because it's a little more well-rounded. Worth a try if you're stopping by the brewery and are in the mood for something dark with restrained sweetness.
