Exemplary lager. We would happily drink many of these.

The given categories don't really capture this beer. It does exactly what it sets out to do, and does it very well.

473 mL can from the LCBO; canned on Nov 5 2018 and served slightly chilled. I tried this after a can of Spaten Münchner Helles for the sake of comparison.

Pours a clear, pale golden colour, with one finger of bubbly, soapy white head settling atop before receding off over the next several minutes. The surface is left totally barren - no cap, no lace, not even a sickly-thin collar - which makes it look pretty flat and lifeless. It smells of doughy bread and biscuity malts, with some light honeyed sweetness also coming through - approachable enough, but I'm not getting much of a hop presence at all.

Tastes pretty good; not necessarily a perfect helles lager, but a passable attempt at one - I'm tasting more of that doughy, bready pale malt sweetness, with hints of gritty grain and biscuit. These flavours are the only game in town, up until the back end of the sip, where a minuscule suggestion of earthy hops finally arises... but the finish reverts back to grainy malts, which do not linger into the off-dry aftertaste. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation levels that gently brush against the tongue; it feels rather smooth, but not very crisp.

Final Grade: 3.37, a B-. London Brewing Co-op's Natural Lager is ok, but not something I'm in a big hurry to return to. Reminds me more of an American blonde than anything else - the malt profile is very similar, and the dearth of hops doesn't help any. I'd take this over Löwenbrau I guess, but I'd also argue that most of the German-sourced lagers available in this market are superior (and literally all of them are cheaper). I might stop by their spot next time I'm in London, to see if they have anything a bit more, um, interesting to sample. SW Ontario lager lovers should give this one a try to see for themselves.
