An extra-rich version of our classic stout. A hint of extra sweetness is punched up nicely with the addition of tart, juicy raspberries from local legend Heeman’s!

500 mL bottle from the brewery; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.

Pours dark black-brown with a burgundy-purplish tinge when held to a bright light; prodigious quantities of puffy, foamy, light tan-coloured head are produced from even a gentle pour. A few minutes later, it has wilted down to a more manageable two-finger cap of lumpy, soapy suds that lasts for another five minutes; a thick coat of sticky lace is left behind in the process. Nice raspberry juiciness on the nose, paired with notes of baker's chocolate, molasses, coffee grounds and cocoa powder.

Pretty good stuff - I think it's an improvement over the original 4 PM, except for maybe the mouthfeel. It tastes of juicy raspberry, dark chocolate and cocoa, with hints of molasses and caramelized sugars; some bitter coffee grounds and herbal, earthy hop notes balance out the back end of the sip. Medium-bodied, with aggressive carbonation that froths up on the tongue, contributing to a fizzy, foamy mouthfeel that limits its drinkability... unless you're willing to wait half an hour after pouring to let it die down. Other than that, it goes down easy enough, with no sign at all of that 8%.

Final Grade: 3.9, a B+. London Brewing's Raspberry 4 PM Sunset is a solid raspberry stout, combining the tart juiciness of the fruit with the roasted malts, chocolate and coffee flavours of the base beer. It's over-carbonated, but that's a slight nuisance at worst, certainly not enough to ruin the experience for me. Absolutely worth a try if the idea of a raspberry stout gets your motor running.
