473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 28 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a blackish-brown cola colour with ruby red highlights, generating more than an inch of foamy beige-coloured head. It lasts for the better part of five minutes, steadily whittled down to a thin collar and wispy-thin cap; scant lace deposition over the course of the session. Roasty aroma with hints of black coffee and subtle ashiness; roasted grains, burnt sugar and earthy hops are also discernible.

It's a pretty good dark lager; a little roastier than average, which may be a point of contention with some beer geeks, but I rather enjoy it. Lightly sweet at the forefront, with hints of toffee, sweetened coffee and bready malts, transitioning into roasted grains, black coffee and earthy bitterness on the back end. Slightly ashy at the finish, preceding a bittersweet aftertaste with lingering hints of coffee. Light-medium in body, with assertive carbonation that feels prickly on the tongue; smooth and fairly crisp, with great drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.91, a B+. If you're in southwestern Ontario and craving a black lager, there really aren't all that many locally brewed options. Silversmith makes a solid one, but that's the only year-round example I can think of off the top of my head. That's why I think London's Organic Black Lager makes for a smart addition to this region's beer scene - if you enjoy the occasional Köstritzer, I think you'll probably appreciate this, too. Not as dry as a traditional schwarz, but no less crushable - it's a lager I'll definitely be buying again at some point.
