500 mL bottle from the brewery; no packaging date and served barely chilled. One of several releases in their 2025 Winter Stout Series.
Pours inky black with glints of copper-brown around the edges of the glass. It's capped with one finger of foamy, tan-coloured head that seeps off over the next few minutes; a messy ring of lace and a frothy collar are the eventual remnants. Peppermint patties and spearmint on the nose, with hints of dark chocolate and coffee also coming through.
The peppermint pattie vibe carries over into the flavour. Dark chocolate, peppermint, fondant and cocoa comprise the bulk of its profile, and honestly I'm having trouble discerning much else here - the mintiness kind of overwhelms the tastebuds, particularly at the finish. Dark, bittersweet chocolate and peppermint candy linger into a slightly warming aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that adds a little bit of prickliness to this stout's smooth, slightly oily mouthfeel. Average drinkability; 500 mL is more than I'd care to drink, but I'll manage.
Final Grade: 3.8, a solid B+. Mint Chocolate 4 PM Sunset is one of those beers that seems really good initially, but becomes more & more tiresome as the session drags on - that minty aftertaste just becomes irritating after a while. In fact, this might be the only 4 PM variant that I wouldn't take over the base, unaltered oatmeal stout. Even still, I've seen this 'mint chocolate stout' gimmick performed with far less finesse, so I'm not all that inclined to bitch any further. Oddly charming in its own way, but not really a brew that I can honestly see myself seeking out again. It's worth a shot if you enjoy minty stouts.
