Deep brown with off-white head. Spiced caramel malt sweetness layered with dried dark fruits, and Belgian bread aromas. Sweet malty flavors dominate with mellow Belgian spices. This Trappist style ale is rich and smooth with a warming alcohol buzz.

Johnny C's pours a reddish brown color, with not much head. Notes of whisky and earth. Flavor is sharp, earthy, and a hints of a Manhattan. Good body and feel. Overall, a sweeter beer, great hints of alcohol, and well put together.

Purchased as a crowler with about 9 days from fill. An "easy" drinking dubbel in that it is smooth without any richness or sweetness bite. There is a subdued fruit taste that is just above the malt foundation that present most of the other flavors.
The aroma was really quite tight, even straight from the pour.
As it opens it has a pleasing fruit quality that is somewhat dark but not dried fruit. Also no too rich. No hope presence in taste to speak of. I prefer the lower carbonation that would'nt fit with tradition, but I find more enjoyable. Solidly moderate body.

The Johnny C's is a Belgian Dubbel is a rich malty beer poured from the tap at the Forager Brewery tasting room/bar. The Dubbel was served in a 12 ounce clear tulip glass and below a medium head, it had a deep reddish brown color which was translucent throughout the glass. The beauty is of this brew is in the tapered tulip and 50/50 percent share of natural light and interior light. The tulip and natural light allows the golden tones within the reddish brown to be revealed near the tapered bottom. The head could be revived by light swirling and carbonation was nicely balanced with good overall mouth feel and the carbonation did not hinder the intended Trappist Ale taste. All very well done by the brew master.
Some dark fruit aromas, slight caramel flavor along with the mellow spice of baked bread and light fruit flavors were present. All which are consistent with Trappist style and monk brewing history.
I did not perceive any hop bitterness and no lingering hop flavors In talking to the Forager's brew masters staff, I complimented them on smoothness and asked how long was the aging? they said they have not had opportunity to age Johnny C's beyond a prescribed limit, but anticipate their future aging effort might extend 6 months or beyond. That should make the very good, even better.
