A double barrel-aged double stout inspired by one of our favorite breakfast treats: French toast. This American double stout was brewed with maple syrup and aged for 17 months in small-format maple syrup bourbon barrels, honey bourbon barrels and rye whiskey barrels and then conditioned on Madagascar and Tahitian vanilla beans, cassia, Ceylon and Krointje cinnamon with Wisconsin maple syrup.

I'm something of a Forager critic... at the same time, I wear a Forager hat everywhere and try to make it for every single release. Rationalize that if you can, because I can't.

That being said, I froze my ass off for the Freedom Toast release - drinking the beer in the line later, after the release, I found myself fairly okay with the long wait. The beer has terrific cinnamon and french toast characteristics. As with all of their beers, it's served too cold (and in freezing temps, my hands sure didn't warm it up) - and it's just too sweet. Cloyingly so. It's fairly thick though, which definitely recommends it, and from a bottle, it's a bit different. The adjuncts and sweetness seem to blend and balance the beer better.
It's a good one. Not one of my favorites (see Crema), but quite good.

L: Jet black no light gets through
S: Smells like maple and cinnamon
T: Super sweet honey, maple, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, then very slight barrel presence
F: One of the thickest beers I've had. Much more viscous that Nillerz.
O: Outstanding. I hope they make a batch two.

Pours pitch black. Nose is wafts of sweet maple, spicy cinnamon, milk chocolate, bourbon, alcohol. Taste is sweet sugary maple, cinnamon spice, chocolate syrup, as it warms bourbon and alcohol heat are notable, oak, vanilla fluff. Smooth, silky mouthfeel. Overall, a fantastic offering. Desserty, borders on cloying, but world class.

4oz pour at the brewery. pours pitch black with a decent amount of head for a barrel-aged stout. smell is bourbon-soaked breakfast in a glass. you get some whiskey sting, cinnamon, maple, chocolate. taste is a nice mix of maple, vanilla, chocolate & cinnamon all backed by the barrels. it’s sweet but it’s also well balanced. feel is thick with a lower carb. this is quite impressive. reminds me of D9, although not quite as good. still, i enjoyed every ounce of this beer!

Motor oil black. Thick. Tan head.
Honey sweetness, a nice spicy rye, warming bourbon. The maple syrup shows the most. Then the cinnamon and vanilla blend together really nicely. This is some serious pastry stout without being too sweet. I love the barrel flavors here. Huge chocolate and fudge flavor. So complex. Very impressed with this one.

Smells of rich maple and cinnamon, taste is vanilla, maple, barrel, and a touch of cinnamon. Very little carb, though it worked because the mouthfeel was rich and full. Best French Toast beer I’ve ever had by a long shot!
