Agates, our very special old ale, was blended from six small format barrels. Our friends at Rock Filter Distillery in Spring Grove, MN gave us these barrels. The dark syrupy liquid was aged in these heirloom grain spirit barrels for 27 months. Agates orchestrates a symphony of layered crescendos of flavor with notes of dried fig, caramelized sugar, tart cherry, mocha, sweet tobacco, old leather and rich chocolate-covered caramel. An exquisite delineation of beer through time, with patience.

This one pours a very dark brown color, nearly black and stout-like, with a very small head, and no lacing.
This smells like a concentrated malt explosion, with caramel, black cherry, raisin, molasses, brown sugar, oak, spirit heat, fig, chocolate, roast, and toffee.
This is really, really sweet - but the intense barrel character helps tamp it down somewhat. It's an overall quite intense beer - I have no idea why it would be packaged in 750s, as a 4 oz would be just about perfect. Despite the intensity, it really is quite delicious. It tastes super complex, with lots of little sweet intensities and complexities. There's a good amount of dark fruit here - almost like a thick and oaky port, with caramel, brown sugar, maple, honey, and toffee as well. There's lots of oak, spicy and bitter, which does the heavy lifting in keeping this one from being too sweet.
This is thick, and not all that boozy. But it's still a pretty slow sipper, as the flavors are quite intense.
This might not be for everybody, as it's just super aggressive in a lot of ways. I enjoy it quite a bit, though.
