This unique blend consists of five of our Barleywine recipes, each aged in different barrels. These include a 28-month Eagle Rare barrel, a 26-month Blanton's barrel, a 23-month 14-year George Dickel barrel, a 33-month Rock Filter barrel, and a 27-month Black Hammer Rock Filter barrel. This blend features a double mash Barleywine, mixed grain Barleywine, honey Barleywine, maple Barleywine, and Vienna malt Barleywine, which make up the threads of this English style. Waves of barrel tones, leathery oak, figs, dried dark fruits, cocoa, holiday spices, roasted nuts, and caramel can all be found in this mahogany liquid.

Forager barleywines rarely disappoint, & they’d bloody well not, for the exorbitant price. This one in a 750ML bottle with five otters on it. If that’s a reference to Wolf & Otter; booya!

Borderline black with tinges of red around the edges. Enough booze in the nose to drunken the guy sitting next to me.

ROMP isn’t playing around. Booze hits like Harrison Smith on a post route, full speed, no pads, yup, I’d be dead. Bourbon for miles, which explains the booziness. Crabapples & green apples for miles, infused with liquid caramel. Very sweet, which could be one of many items mentioned on the label. Char, wood, leather in small quantities, ending with…booze. I’d have guessed. Hugely thick, more on the lines of a big stout than a big barleywine. I’m going to plow through this entire bottle solo.

Elite. Almost worth the heinous price, this is a world-class barleywine.

Romp has a thick and viscous pour, with a deep, opaque brown hue. Notably, there is zero carbonation buildup, with a still, contemplative surface.

The nose is rich and caramelly, with prominent notes of stewed fruit and candied dates. Despite the sweeter elements, the aroma remains balanced and not overly saccharine.

On the palate, this massive barleywine delivers an abundance of caramel and honey flavors, complemented by subtle hints of chestnut and baking spices. Dark fruit undertones add depth, while the barrel aging imparts whispers of char and leather, enhancing the overall complexity.

The beer's thick, viscous nature coats the palate, providing a mouthfeel not necessarily indicative of the style. The low of carbonation contributes to a smooth, almost silky texture, allowing the intricate flavors to linger alongside great heat on the finish.

Overall, Romp is a testament to the art of blending and barrel aging, offering a rich, multi-layered experience that showcases the depth and complexity achievable in a Barleywine. Its harmonious balance of sweetness, spice, and barrel character makes it a standout offering.

On tap at Forager. Dark brown color.

Maple, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, dark fruits, fig. Pretty typical forager bw flavors. Charred barrel, oak, bourbon, rye. Tons of barrel, warming. Leaves some heat in the finish. Not sure I’d guess all the various barrel flavors, but lots of good things going on here. Maybe the honey shows in the finish with some sweetness.
