330ml bottle served in a tulip. Brought to me by a German friend. 211119 is on the neck -- I'm assuming this is the "best by" date.

Pours a rich amber with a gigantic head and a lot of carbonation. Hazy (or murky, as the case may be). Smell is caramel malt, banana and clove (wtf?), yeast. Doesn't smell bad -- just unexpected. Only the faintest hint of smoke in the nose for me.

Taste is strong on the caramel malt, again little in the way of smoke, just a hint. The banana and clove aren't as prevalent right now (maybe more as it warms), the rich caramel malt flavor reminds me a bit of a scotch ale. But the banana flavor seems to be building slightly on subsequent sips.

Mouthfeel is light and smooth. Overall, I suspect some mistake was made with this beer, or it's experimental or something without it being clear to me because I can't read the German label. It's not bad, but it's probably not as intended.

Hazy orange color with beige head. Aroma is really malty and sugary with some butterscotch and caramel. Taste follows with the butterscotch and caramel, not overly sweet, finish being really balanced out by some earth hops. There is also a bit of cardboard but not too bad. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Considering the description, the butterscotch and caramel notes are coming most probably from the wood aging. I don't really get any smoke notes but except that, it delivers what it was supposed to.

Pours a murky brown with two-finger off-white head that lingers, leaving behind some minimal lacing. The aroma is not that of a typical Rauchbier, or at least not as intense. The soft oakiness is nice, but it also has a bit of a soapy scent. The taste is ok on the front end, with a noticeable smokiness. However, this is quickly lost to more soapiness. It also has a kind of coconut-type aftertaste, when following the soap flavors, gives it a weird sun tan lotion feel. Light body with medium carbonation. Overall, not a very pleasant drinking experience.

I've only had one beer from the Insel Brauerei that I would revisit (Meerjungfrau), though, I did really enjoy that one.
