Collaboration with Magic Rock Brewing
Magic Scones is our blackberry lemon scone sour IPA inspired by and brewed in collaboration with our friends over the pond at Magic Rock Brewing! We brewed this beer together with specialty malts selected to impart that sweet biscuity scone character, local honey, copious blackberries, lemon zest, milk sugar and a lemondrop dry hop to brighten the finish! The results are sure to get you sozzled!

The copper hue is lightly hazed, with a distinct tint of purple (SRM 8-11). The creamy head is big and almond as it slowly settles from three inches to a thick blanket over about ten minutes. Ultimately a thick curtain of lace is plastered to a Pretentious Glass Company Pub Tulip.
Lavendar is quite prominent, with subtle blackberries in the background. Lemon is added and builds from modest warmth.
Mild tartness is in balance with sweetness and bitterness. The lemon is primary and very well done, while blackberries add a mild accent. Acidity is sharp and pleasant. The finish is long, with muted notes of the initial flavors.
A full body just short of being dense. The texture is similar to slick satin. Alcohol is on target, as is the soft carbonation. It has a mild astringency.
The scone concept is still very obvious in this two-month old can. The herbal notes are much more discernible now than in the fresh can. I found both to be highly enjoyable and expect it would be an excellent choice for brunch or a spring garden party. Much thanks to Dave.

L: Pours a very murky purple with a bright pink fluffy head that dissipates rather quickly
S: So much berry. This smells amazing and is reminiscent of Great Notion's Blueberry Muffin (minus the butter). Inviting and fruity.
T: Lemon brings quite the acidity followed by really jammy, fruity berries. Like popping fresh blackberries in my mouth. The malt and hops seem to take quite the back seat to the fruit, but I think that makes sense.
F: Tart acid on the tongue brings this beer to life. IT finishes sweet and smooth. Very light carbonation.
O: Would absolutely buy this again. It's named well - this is a berry scone in a beer.

L: Poured from a tallboy can to a snifter glass. Had a purplish color and a thick, almost viscous consistency (almost like a smoothie). There was a half inch of off white, foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Very good lacing.
S: An interesting and sweet aroma of blackberries, yeast, citrus fruit, and honey.
T: Tasted of a whole lot of citrus fruit (lemon, especially), some light honey notes (kind of fleeting), a good shot of blackberries (a big component), and some mild yeast notes. A zesty, sweet and vibrant flavor. It grows on you after a while, but certainly has a weird charm to it. Quite tasty.
F: A fair amount of carbonation with a lively finish. Medium-bodied.
O: A slightly oddball beer that works well. Worth a look.
