Collaboration with Odell Brewing Co.
On November 17th, 1989, John McDonald loaded a keg of Boulevard Pale Ale into the back of his pickup and drove to a restaurant a few blocks down the street. Scarcely 24 hours later and 650 miles away, Doug Odell loaded a keg of Odell Golden Ale into the back of his pickup and... you get the idea. They were the first kegs of beer either of them ever sold, but they wouldn't be the last. This deep amber ale celebrates 25 years of brewing with an ample body of caramel-toffee malt balanced by piney hop notes. Here's a toast to working hard and sticking with it.

Boulevard Brewing Co. "Silver Anniversary Ale"
750ML brown glass bottle, corked and caged. "BATCH NUMBER/BEST BY DATE: SA14289-2 07-2015"
Notes via stream of consciousness: I had no idea this was so old. Time flies while you're drinking good beer. Unfortunately I don't know how the beer was originally supposed to taste... bummer, but OK. They've recommended you drink it within one year. How strong is this? 7.3%? I'd think that would hold up for more than a year unless it was initially quite hoppy. Oh well, we'll see. It's poured a clear russet/chestnut brown body beneath a creamy head of khaki foam. The head retention seems to be pretty good, probably bolstered by the fine bubbles I can se rising within the glass. The aroma suggests brown sugar, some gently caramelish malt, and leafy and earthy hops that I'm guessing are East Kent Goldings at least in part. There's also some yeasty fruitiness that's reminiscent of apples and light red berries. It's pleasant and welcoming. OK, on to the flavor... pretty similar, lots of yeasty fruitiness, some bready maltiness, similar brown sugar note, and earthy and very slightly spicy hops unless that's coming from the alcohol. Or is there actual spice added? If so, age has dampened it quite a bit, but now that I'm thinking about that, perhaps some spice has been added. Interesting. It's very soft now, and the mouthfeel adds to that. It's medium bodied, maybe even medium-full, with a dextrinous edge but it never really gets full. A very fine-bubbled, seemingly moderate but also slightly effervescent carbonation lends a gentle caress and then warms to become lightly airy and smooth. Did I miss anything? Oh, the head dropped and there was little lacing left. Disappointing, but I'm not sure if that has to do with age or not. Overall I like the flavor, and I like the balance. Both could have been corrupted with age, but I think the raw bones are still visible. I wish I'd had this fresh but it's still quite enjoyable.

750 ml bottle.poured with a clear copper colored body topped by a large, durable beige head.
The smell has more earthy hops than I prefer along with suggestions of baked bread, brown sugar and faint spices.
The flavor is less earthy, way more malty, and more appealing, if a bit less complex. Mildly bitter.
Lively but soft carbonation in a medium+ body.

Aroma is malts, caramel and thick graininess. The flavor is malts, caramel, fruit/berries, medium sweetness, very little bitterness and mix of tart and graininess in the finish.

It pours a lovely, dark, opaque dark orange. The head is a thick and foamy off-white, and leaves plenty of lace. Good aroma on this one. Aroma opens with notes of pine and malt. A sip opens up the taste palette with smooth malts, before giving way to a bit of raisins and toffee. It feels great. Very smooth and filling. Overall, great beer! Glad O'Dell shared the recipe with Boulevard, and glad they could produce this tasty beer.
Served in a 12oz snifter.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of a caramel cream color over a mildly hazy copper-amber body with very fine sediment and moderate relaxed carbonation. Retention is average and lacing is light and spotty. 3.75
(Smell) A pretty simple but inviting nose of caramel biscuit malts with soft toffee undertones, very clean aroma. Faded but earthy and piney hop notes with a mild bitterness. Potency is mild. 3.5
(Taste) Caramel and biscuit toffee malt notes forward with a moderate bitterness, softly nutty and earthy bitterness with a low hop flavor and bitterness. Finishes chalky dry with a lingering biscuit graininess. 3.75
(Mouthfeel) Texture is lightly chewy, slick, smooth and very dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a light frothiness and a fully crisp finish. Body is shy of medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly slightly earthy bitter and softly grainy over sweet. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 3.5
(Overall) An enjoyable but simple malt bodied ale that doesn't come off as too much more than a slightly enhanced body amber ale. Not much hop character and not much going for the malt flavor. Drinkable, but not worth an inflated price tag. 3.5

S: smells of caramel malts and some fruitiness. Piney hop notes on the label are gone
T: Taste is toasty caramel malt sweetness with some slight fruitiness and spice. Swallow is more caramel malt and toast with some nuts and additional fruitiness
M: Heavier side of medium in body with slightly prickly carbonation and a refreshing finish
O: Taking some time in getting around to doing a proper review has done some interesting things to this bottle. It has some great flavors and I think I like it better now than when it was fresh since the hops hid the fruity character. Definitely tastes more belgian influenced now than before.

Sampled this beer poured into a snifter at cellar temperature. the beer pours a chestnut hue with eggshell white head forming a dense creamy cap of 3 cm on my beer.
Aroma is malt dominant with toffee and caramel and a bit of light fruit. Not too much of a hop profile comes through on the nose.
I get a similar flavor as the nose advertised with some toffee and fruit notes mixing nicely and allowing just a hint of booze to shine on the swallow. The flavor is a little mild for a strong ale but isnt flawed anywhere.
The beer does drink pretty easy and is an enjoyable malt centric beer. ID buy again if I found a bottle, but it seems uncertain to be found again anytime soon.
