Collaboration with Cigar City Brewing
Combining CCB’s expertise with tropical fruit flavors and Boulevard’s love of pale ales, Collaboration No. 5 – Tropical Pale Ale begins with a base of soft pilsner malt layered with Maris Otter, Munich and caramel malts. Huge late hopping with a blend of Mosaic, Citra, Lemondrop and Azacca lends bright flavors of mango, pear, blueberry and citrus to a pale ale featuring slightly toasted biscuit and caramel/toffee notes. Infused with freshly sliced grapefruit at the conclusion of the boil, our tropical pale ale is briefly aged on passion fruit and grapefruit at the end of fermentation resulting in a refreshing acidity and tropical fruit flavor and aroma. At 7.3 ABV and 55 IBUs, Collaboration No. 5 – Tropical Pale Ale finishes slightly tart with bright citrus character from dry-hopping with Lemondrop, Azacca and Pacific Jade hops.

"Best by 2/13/16"; drank 10/25/16 @ the Yarchives.
Semi-opaque orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big eggshell head; a frothy curtain of lace.
Mango, pineapple & grapefruit notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Mango & pineapple flavors up front; dry wheat & faint pine needle notes on the finish.
This smelled amazing but was a bit too dry on the finish for me to truly love. Still above average.

Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an unmarked pint glass.
A: Mild hazy bright gold, with a few fingers' worth of big fluffy white head with good retention. Lots of small bubble carbonation running up the edges of the glass.
S: Melon, papaya, pineapple and citrus. Cracker malt backbone, and a yeasty presence in the background.
T: Mango and tangerine citrus with pith bitterness. Cracker malts. Grapefruit and bitter near the swallow. I'm still getting some yeasty flavors as well - not off-putting, but a little strange in a pale ale. It tastes like this might be fermented with a saison yeast - though I don't think that's the case.
M: Light body, low alcohol presence. Carbonation sensation is on the low side for style, but adequate.
O: Really quite enjoyable. I didn't have much in the way of expectations going in but I liked it. Nice blend of flavors.

As a hardcore IPA drinker, I did NOT like this IPA. It fundamentally sucked on all levels. Sorry.

Poured into an insulated Bodum double walled pint glass. Cloudy deep orange in color. Thin dissipating head. Pleasantly surprised for a bottle that is a year old. Nice yeasty smell with a little alcohol. Has a character of a saison with a tart lime sorbet taste.
