Tried the Black Pale Ale at a buddy's house. It poured a nearly opaque black with tan head that did not leave much lace. The scent was a good mix of roast and pine. The taste followed the scent but also had hints or orange like citrus. The Mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's decent and worth a shot.

This one pours a midnight black with a tan head that is rich and long lived. There is nice lacing down the glass that eventually disappears mostly.

The nose is Coffee, peppery hops and apples with some bread in the nose.

The taste is rather bitter and unbalanced in the hops. There is also notes of caramel and nutmeg. Not to impressive.

The moutfeel is a tad bit watery.

Overall an OK beer, but not a great beer.

Look - OK... I'm going to give this high marks on look. I'm not a big fan of darker beers, but I love the way they look. This one pours a beautiful dark (extremely dark... almost black) brown, with a little bit of red glow. The head is beautifully thick and lingers.

Smell - Odd to say the least. Smells roasted, yet pale. Kind of goes with the territory I guess, but it seemed more disorienting and confusing than anything else.

Taste - Much like the smell, exceptionally confusing... which is good, because I think that's what they were after. I mean the bottle even says "what sort of dark art is this?" Well, if you wanted to confuse and disorient your audience... Job well done. I mean Black Ale is one thing, but to try and pump up the Pale aspects of this hybrid... just read the Transformers comparison in the "Overall" part of this review.

Feel - Very "meh." It looks carbonated (rising bubbles and such). It smells carbonated (given that it is able to push it's odd complexity to the nose). It even tastes carbonated... but it feels like water... "Meh"

Overall - This beer has no soul. It's like watching the first Transformers movie and realizing it doesn't know what it wants to be. Transformers purported to be something epic, but the level of stupidity involved detracted from the overall enjoyably... same thing here (whereas G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra knew it was stupid and embraced it, and thus came out the superior film... even if the average movie goer didn't pick up on it)

Smells nice, but the taste is roasted with no hops at all. It is also watery and flat, which does not help the beer at all. The tasting room beers I've had have all been misses.

Appearance:black body with a thick tan head that's dense and fluffy and forma a thick lacing around the glass.
smell: nice smoooth and mildly roasted malts smells, dark fruit and raisins mixed in with some fig and mild brown sugar.
tatse: Malts upfront with spices as it hits the middle of your mouth. Mildly tart on the corners with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied smooth and mild carbonation.
Over, this is a good pale ale don't pass it up if you see it.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Skaker pint glass, "best by" date 2-22-16.

APPEARANCE: pours dark, black color that does not allow light to penetrate, one-finger, tan head that dissipated until just a thin, broken layer of small bubbles remained, significant lacing, lower than average carbonation, I think?

SMELL: molasses, roasted/smokey flavor, black licorice, chocolate.

TASTE: initially sweet then smokey/roasted flavor with chocolate and then a citrus hop profile.

PALATE: medium body and lighter carbonation.

OVERALL: this is an unusual beer to be sure, a cross between porter and pale ale, it's a fun beer and glad I had it but I'm just not a fan of porter and the smokey/roasted notes are just not what I'm after, this was a well made beer and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys porter.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is black with some red highlights and a medium sized tan head. The aroma is roasted malt. The taste is roasted malt with a large does of hops. A good American Black Ale.

12oz bottle, highball glass, best by 11/29/15.

Pretty much opaque and porter-like appearance. Very sticky khaki head. Citric hops and chocolate malt aroma. Opens with a sharp citrus punch and finishes with a lingering bitterness very typical of American Pale Ales. This overlays a full malt body, chocolate malt with some burnt grain. I put this into the hoppy Porter category rather than the American Black Ale category and I like hoppy Porters. The body is thin, actually a lot like a, you guessed it, Porter! Thin and astringent. If they're shooting for ABA, back off on the chocolate malt, but I think it's tasty.

Poured out almost pitch black with 1-2 fingers of head. Aroma is mild hop and roasted malts. Taste was on par with aroma. Black Pale Ale does have a nice mouth feel. Have a great day my friends.

Pours dark black and has normal pine and citrus pale ale scents. Feels smoother than normal pale ales, tastes like a pale ale, citrus and pine hints. Pretty good.

It pours black as a bucket of tar. Think 4 inch tan head. Strange citrus smells with some coffee notes. Tastes kinda like a porter than was soaked in grass and dirty gym socks. This is a strange beer. I probably wouldn't drink it again.

Tasted on October 3, 2015 in a Teku glass from a 12 oz bottle with a best by date of 11/29/15. Look is very dark reddish brown, with a medium tan head and some lingering lacing. Smell is malty and roasty. Taste is roasted malts with hints dark cocoa and bitter coffee bean. Feel is medium in body with a somewhat bitter finish.

Poured from 12 oz bottle. Dark with red highlights and a thick, tan head. The nose is mainly floral with a bit of sugary candy, maybe smarties. This brew has a roasty character with just a bit of hoops bitterness on the back end. There is an earthy, almost peaty note somewhat reminiscent of Guiness.
This could easily be considered a porter rather than a black pale ale. What I like about this one as compared to black IPAs is the balance. There is a sweetness that seems to build a bit, but otherwise this is a solid beer worth trying.

Near black in color, slight white head. Aroma isn't super strong but there is some roastiness and coffee notes. Taste follows the nose with some more roasted barley and coffee notes. Fairly smooth mouthfeel and slightly dry finish. Nothing fancy here, but overall enjoyable.

Appearance: Almost pitch black, with a ruby undertone. Sturdy head of tan bubbles and lovely tree-line lace.

Aroma: Roasty malts all the way.

Taste: Surprisingly hoppy upon first sip, with the burnt roastiness and chocolate notes coming in underneath and towards the finish. A well-balanced and delicious dark pale ale that I’d gladly enjoy again.

Poured out an opaque, jet black color with a small, tan head. It smelled of pine, citrus and roastiness. It tasted of citrus, pine and strong roasted malt with dark chocolate. It was crisp, smooth and medium bodied.

Not tasting much of the pale ale in this one... slight hops (not a lot), smells and tastes more like a porter to me. Maybe I can't get past the color, but I'm just not tasting much pale ale in this one. I will drink another one, but just ok.
