Appearance: a beautiful chestnut brown/ruby color. The head is a light tan of superfine bubbles that fades quickly to near nothing except at the edge of the glass.
Aroma: chocolate-covered cherries. There is no fruit in this beer, but candied cherry dominates the nose.
Flavor: chocolate-covered cherries (as in the nose). There is also a generic holiday spice flavor present (not spruce), almost like ribbon candy. No hops despite the 59 IBUs. English in style. No alcohol flavor or heat.
Mouthfeel: think and chewy – a nice weight for the style.
Overall: meh! I’ve long anticipated a barleywine from Boulevard, but this is a miss.

Pours a dark and deep bronze with a little less than a finger of khaki head. There is some lacing. Aroma is nutty, caramel, and toffee. Flavor profile is the same. Mouth feel is medium-thin with a good consistency to it that falls somewhere between grainy and smooth. Overall, flavorful, but not too loud in any one regard.
