Picked up a single of this one to give it a shot. Not getting great ratings/reviews, but why not see for myself? This is a strong Scotch-style "Wee Heavy" ale aged on Scotch-soaked oak chips (not in Scotch whisky barrels, in other words).
Pours a nice unfiltered ruby/brownish color with a slight translucence and a small-ish cap of khaki-colored head that sinks to a long-lasting half-finger in my glass. Surface is bare other than a small island of loosely-connected bubbles in the center. Good color but otherwise the appearance is a bit lacking.
Nose is green apple-forward (acetaldehyde, in other words), slight peat smoke, earthy and slightly tannic notes with heady caramel malt. That iodine/mineral note from the scotch is surprisingly present here as well. However, the acetaldehyde is just out of control here and is honestly giving me a huge headache just from continued sniffs of the beer. The official press release for this beer states that this beer "opens with aromas of fig and raisin" on the nose, but I don't get any dark fruit character whatsoever. Not a fan so far.
Flavor is better by far, with some nice chewy malt in the middle and earthy peat towards the end of each sip. A bit of herbal hop and a succinct finish that closes mildly buttery and sweet but does so with a sense of alacrity. The oak comes across better here than on the nose, by far, but it still feels forced and cheap. Not sure if this beer was created with some cost-cutting measures involved or something, but it just doesn't feel done or fully thought-out. A Scotch whisky influenced imperial Wee Heavy is a good idea, and there are obviously a lot of crossover elements that are ripe for the taking, but this seems to fall off from the original concept.
Feel is completely ineffectual as well, with a surprisingly watery and boring palate that tries very little to linger on the tongue, instead floundering about right after the midpoint of each sip. The finish has some vestigial qualities of oak, Scotch whisky peatiness and caramel/wet earth, but there's no lingering warmth or satisfaction that comes from sipping this. Hope they rectify the issues with this beer if they ever make it again.

Very good cigar beer. Malty, sweet, boozy. Medium bodied but kind of thin. Lot of floaters at the bottom. Good flavor, but a bit thinner than I expected from the style.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Beautiful caramel/copper pour with thick fluffy off-white head. Great lacing.
S: Sweet and malty... mixed with smoke and peat.
T/F: Just like it smells. Toasted grains and caramel sugars to start. Modest sweetness. Complimented by a bit of smoke and peat... oak... and some decent hop bitterness for balance. Medium bodied... hides its 9.6% heft. Decent carbonation.
O: Not my favorite style, but a well executed beer. A good mix of flavors... true to what a Wee Heavy should be... and I like that it's not super unbalanced sweet.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep ruddy brown beer topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of light tan head which fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of caramel, toffee, and slight banana note with a hint of smoke and vanilla.
T: Taste is nice smoke, toffee and banana, oak, caramel, light vanilla. Some nice earthy notes on here too. On the swallow there's more banana, earthy notes, oak, toffee, slight vanilla and some lingering smoke.
M: This beer is fairly full in body with a slightly slick feel on the palate. Carbonation is on the low end but is adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer. It probably isn't the most traditional and the banana note is a little odd but it does work well. This beer has a great amount of complexity and the flavors work well together. It's worth a try if they make it again.

12 ounce bottle into Libby tulip
Best by 7/11/17 (bottled 2/11/17)
L- Ruby red appears brown, no head
S- Rich slightly roasted sweet caramel malt
T-Sweet malt, mellow, peat smoky
F-Medium-bodied, average carbonation, slight syrupy
Overall this beer had potential however it was a tad bit too sweet, I personally really enjoyed the smokiness though
