Templeton Rye is typically barrel-aged for at least four years. Occasionally, however, a special batch is allowed to slumber for two more. To our great good fortune, those six-year barrels found their way to us. This tawny celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey offers notes of vanilla and charred oak, with a delightful boozy sweetness.

Had at Brewery this Summer 2021 about the middle of June. Aroma is definitely alcohol, sweetness, and whiskey. This is one killer rye wine. The first sip was WOW! Strong on alcohol and whiskey flavor and no head to speak of. I LOVE IPA's; be they single, double, triple or Quadruple, which these fits into being a wine/beer. Like one reviewer said this one I had was 14.3 ABV as it was 2021 iteration. 16 IBUs

cool story, this was on tap at a random beer fest in idaho, alongside the maple edition, no other boulevard beers present, nobody from the brewery or even the distributor around to talk about it, just some volunteer offering full pint pours for a couple of tickets. not sure how a situation like this ever transpires, not a heady fest at all, very little other specialty beers even in the mix that day, but lucky me and my and my handful of buddies who decided to take advantage of our good fortune. this is a delicious and enormous beer, a special edition aged edition in the six year rye barrels, and the maturity is evident. its barleywine with deeply earthy rye all through it, rich and luxurious notes of tanned leather, whiskey soaked raisin, fig jam, dark break, oak and vanilla, maple and molasses, its sweet and its rich, but its enormously complex, and the rye male and the rye whiskey together are synergistic like they are in all of these, but this one is deeper, more intense, woodier, and just insanely smooth for its high abv, regal and fancy and worthy, this is one of my favorite variants of this to date. it seems so organic and wholesome, so deep and layered, it warms up super well, isnt even all that boozy for what it is, and the more mature barrels really do something special here. boulevard has had a lot of lackluster trend chasing junk out there this summer, but this is a needed reminder that these guys are still capable of their old glory. what a beer! especially for a festival!

Bottle: Poured a murky cloudy amber color ale with a small off-white foamy head with limited retention and not much lacing. Aroma of rye notes with some woody notes and some caramelized malt is quite enticing. Taste is also a nice mix of rye notes with some woody notes and caramelized notes with some light residual sugar notes. Body is pretty full with good carbonation. Nice barrel aged rye wine.

Boulevard Brewing Co. "Rye On Rye 6"
12 fl. oz . brown glass bottle, "BEST BY... 10FEB2021"
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a hazy, ruby accented deep chestnut brown body beneath a two-finger thick head of khaki colored foam. It's a beautiful color, and it's not really that hazy, but there is some particulate visible in suspension. The aroma expresses bright Bourbon, dark dried fruit, brown sugar, oak, some soft spiciness, and a hint of apple. I have to admit that I can't exactly remember the original but my impression is that there's a fuller aroma here. On to the flavor... it's pretty rich, and it includes a lot of sweetish Bourbon and dried dark fruit, mainly sticky black raisins and figs. The oak is stronger, and there's a spritz of alcohol to it. Along with a moderate bitterness they lend it a dryness that balances the sweet malt nicely. There is a note of rye to it but I can't say that I'm really seeing it as spicy, perhaps because of the alcohol. How strong is this? 12.9%!!! Given that I'd say the alcohol has been kept in check. It should have some to it, especially being a Bourbon barrel aged beer, and I think it comes through nicely and blends in well. The head has dropped to a pretty good creamy collar, and there's some nice lacing as well. Thinking about it, that's actually quite good for a barrel aged beer of almost 13%. It's got a dextrinous body that's medium to medium-full, and a soft and smooth, creamy but also gently tingling carbonation. Really nicely done!!!

Since this is first review for this beer, I opted to copy the details of this beer from Boulevard's website as more useful that any personal review that I could write up. Enjoy!
The origin of Rye on Rye can be traced back to 2009 when we had the opportunity to add freshly emptied Templeton Rye casks to our barrel collection. At the time we agreed to purchase the barrels, we didn’t have a beer in mind, but Brewmaster Steven Pauwels and our brewing and quality teams quickly decided it would be interesting (and ultimately crazy delicious) to explore what would happen to a giant, tawny rye beer if we aged it in wet rye whiskey barrels following primary fermentation.
The 2019 release, Rye on Rye 6, is extra special - thanks to some fantastic barrels from our friends in Iowa. Templeton Rye is typically barrel-aged for at least four years. Occasionally, however, a special batch is allowed to slumber for two more. To our great good fortune, a truckload of those six-year barrels found their way to us. This tawny celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey delivers notes of vanilla and charred oak with a delightful, boozy sweetness.
Pouring deep garnet in color, Rye on Rye 6 pops with aromas of spicy, fruity rye malt with equally present notes of rye whiskey, vanilla, toffee and charred oak. Certainly warming at 12.9% ABV, Rye on Rye 6 is of medium body offering chewy caramel/toffee malt character balanced by earthy, herbal, citrusy Styrian Golding and Citra hops.
Fermentable Ingredients
Pale malt, malted rye, Munich malt, Cara 50, Simpson’s Crystal Rye, dextrose, brown sugar
Hops
Magnum, Citra, Styrian Golding
Yeast
Scottish ale
Aging
10 months in freshly emptied Templeton Rye 6 barrels
Unlike previous batches of Rye on Rye, Rye on Rye 6 is 100% barrel-aged.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 2/14/19, had 7/5/19.
Pours a medium amber, fairly clear, with a one inch foamy head and a good amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of rye, caramel, dates, brown sugar, raisins, malt, some cherries, light rye whiskey- more as warms. Flavors of rye whiskey, caramel, rye, malt, brown sugar, oak, dates, raisins, some cherries. Smooth, a good medium body, well carbonated.
Lots of aromas and flavors, the barrels are effective but more subtle than expected. It’s very good, but don’t see where the extra two years made any difference compared to the regular version.
