a fine pale ale here, but nothing too exciting. not as juicy and bold on the hop front as it could have been, but it has wonderful balance and drinkability, as well as a very broad appeal. one thing i liked about a lot of the deep draft beers is their body and smoothness. its quite obvious that they have a patient mash schedule for most of their beers, that protein rest phase manifests itself in a lot of these, but especially in this pale ale, where a smooth fluffy body leads into an impossibly dry finish. clever in a beer with some grain sweetness in the middle, its a surprising twist at the end. i think they missed an opportunity to crank up the hops though, i know its a pale not an ipa, but it doesnt smell like its been dry hopped much if at all, and i think its really missing in the aroma. the flavor is also missing a little bit of hops, this is as grain forward as it is hoppy, not really what the style has become, and aside from a yeast flavor in this beer, its almost english style in the end, not american, regardless of hop varietals used. maybe the least dynamic recipe in here, but still a well made brew, and a very sessionable one. i hope to see them come out with an ipa here soon.
