White Stout w/ Coffee, Vanilla & Lactose • 6.0% ABV

Our "white stout” is brewed with all of the elements of a traditional stout but without the roasted malts traditionally used in these recipes. Instead, we infuse this decadent and full bodied ale with locally roasted Hale Toriba beans and vanilla to provide the delightful aromas of fresh roasted coffee and white chocolate that this brew is famous for. It won’t be long now until everyone has heard the good word of the Guilty Remnant!

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Dec 24 2025 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy golden amber colour, generating one finger of soapy white head that melts away with two minutes or so. A thin collar is the only significant remnant, though it does leave behind a swath of lace after each sip; not terribly visually appealing. Vanilla is prominent on the nose, but there are also notes of coffee, sweet cream and a touch of chocolate.

Tastier than most of the white stouts I've had in the past; I'm getting cocoa butter and milk sugar, with vanilla also coming through clearly. The coffee asserts itself later in the sip, adding a roasty, slightly bitter quality to the back end; vanilla and white chocolate chip cookies dissipate into a bittersweet conclusion, followed by a slightly sweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with restrained carbonation that delicately agitates the surface of the palate, resulting in a silky-smooth mouthfeel. Decent drinkability, but too sweet and strong to be a realistic session option.

Final Grade: 3.84, a B+. As noted by the previous reviewer (scott451), Guilty Remnant definitely has a 'white chocolate' thing going on. The coffee adds a token hint of roasty bitterness to the profile, but beyond that, the flavour profile is relatively sweet - not surprising, given the use of both lactose and vanilla extract. If you go into this expecting a white chocolate milk stout, I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised by this one. I'm no fan of white stouts, but this is a well-rendered example that leans into its strengths, which helps me to forget that it doesn't look, smell or even taste like a traditional stout. If you're curious about this oxymoronic substyle, Guilty Remnant is a great starting point.

From a 473ml can poured into a pint glass. A scant two finger white head on a hazy golden orange.. The head diminishes to a thin layer. Lots of lace rings.

Cocoa and some vanilla in the nose. Tastes of cocoa. Some coffee and vanilla. If they were trying for a white chocolate flavour then they succeeded. It tastes very different from what it looks like. A dry, slightly bitter finish.

Smooth and well balanced. A medium/light body and medium carbonation. Overall an interesting American Stout. it would make a good desert beer.

Poured no foam. Looks like a regular beer, but hold on now.
Smells strongly of vanilla extract and chocolate. Uh oh? Is this a white stout? It sure is! Let's take a look.

Hmm, tastes like it should be midnight black with a potent vanilla and chocolate coffee flavor. Interesting. It's like my eyes and mouth are saying 2 different things. Not getting the roasted or smokey flavor you get from a black stout, but the vanilla and chocolate flavors are probably even stronger here.

It's not bad at all although it's not too great either. The flavor is quite potent. Couldn't drink more than 1 of these at a time. I'll pass on this on my next Blood Brothers purchase. Either way, maybe try one for yourself. Not everyone would like this beer here.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. My fifth beer from the Toronto, Ontario brewery, and fourth for 2025. With Sundae the cat...

Can purchased and drank at Fattey Beer Company in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a golden light orange-ish color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like honey, sugar cookie, coffee, oats, and white chocolate.

This is one of the more successful “white stouts” which has always been a peculiar style to me. They never really taste completely like stouts to me – that char and roastiness from a good stout is just not there. Casting aside the style question, this still does taste good, with a caramel drizzled sugar cookie vibe, dunked in sweet coffee, with white chocolate.

This is medium bodied, fairly creamy, and pretty drinkable.

This was fairly good even though I think the style is a bit silly.

Look: Pours a semi opaque golden orange with a tightly bubbled white one finger head. The head pulls back to a thin ring around the glass after 3 minutes.

Smell: Strongly of dark chocolate with whipped creme, vanilla and hints of espresso.

Taste: LIght with vanilla and sugar wafers on the front end. The middle sip has a pronounced light espresso taste that comes forward. Vanilla syrup finishes the sip.

Feel: Medium carbonation. Light bodied, with a distinct sugary syrupiness on the end.

White stouts are typically a gimmick I can do without, but this beer has a lovely vanilla backbone that really tastes delicious. I give it an A-

A- Excellent looking snow white head, that is dense and creamy looking, and shows some nice retention, thereby creating some interesting foamy lacing around the inside of my glass. As for the liquid itself, it is fairly hazed, golden yellow in color, and there is a large amount of suspended particulate swirling about....not sure if this is yeast but it looks like small clumps of the good stuff. There is plenty of carbonation in this one, with many fine columns of bubble rising aggressively. Overall this is a very decent looking white stout!

S- Huge amounts of coffee aroma, fresh pressed dark roast, black Americano style! Lesser aromas of fresh vanilla bean, cream, yeasty dry biscuit, and some stronger, but still in the background, is milk chocolate, mocha truffle filling, and a finish that is Earthy and of charred malt....very rich and enticing on the nostrils!

T- Wow the vanilla really shines on the palate, before anything else is noted. Creamy chocolate, lactose sweetness, and french vanilla flavored dark roast coffee come out, but overall the stout character is a little lost on me in this area, as I don't find it super roasty or with enough of the charred Earthy quality to make it taste more like a stout....delectably sweet however....like a coffee cake.

M/O- I find the body to be on the lighter end of the spectrum, and the carbonation, while it isn't aggressive (which is what one wants), its not a real creamy delicate type. As for the drinkability, while I do like it, I am finding the longer I am enjoying this one, the flavor is becoming more cloying and I'm wanting something refreshing to cleanse the palate. I think this does make a good dessert brew, but I think it would be best to share. Glad I tried it but it veers from being a stout at heart...good though!

Can: Poured a golden color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of floral coffee notes with some vanilla and light residual sugar notes. Taste is also a good mix of floral coffee notes with some chocolate and vanilla with some light residual sugar notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Enjoyable for a style that I don’t drink very often.

473ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for around $4 Cdn.

Appearance - brew with middling haziness, bright golden colour and nearly two fingers of long lasting head.

Smell- lots of vanilla with some coffee as well. Definitely on the sweeter side of things.

Taste- subdued vanilla, plenty of sweetness, and then lingering sweetness. Watery after the initial sip. Very little coffee.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied leaning light so the booze is well hidden. There is also a creaminess that is pleasant, the lactose likely having considerable influence over that.

Overall- solid pale stout, with good but a bit too sweet of flavouring. Wish the coffee presence was a bit bigger in here, it doesn’t need to lead, but taste wise it seems like an afterthought. The feel is really nice and a solid beer overall, but probably not one in my regular rotation.
