Notes from the brewer: WILD RICE OLE ALE, 8%. A rich malty English Old Ale with molasses and Minnesota wild rice. Traditionally an old ale is a mix between a Scotch Ale and an English Barleywine. Tastes similiar to a strong Octoberfest,
perfect for blustery, rainy fall days.
Served from the tap at the brewhouse, also poured from a growler.
Appears as a very dark brown beer, with ruby red color influences. Frothy head at pour, settles to off white cap, Moderate lacing.
Aroma is rich with malt, and ripe with dark, dried fruit such as figs. Has the nutty, earthy aspect from the wild rice in both the aroma and the taste. Taste is slightly sweet, with dark chocolate, and with the strong backbone of malt. Taste profile is rather quick and complete, without additional nuances throughout. Mouth feel is medium and pleasing, provides a good opportunity at mouth coating and swilling of beer to get all nuances.
What is always enjoyed from a Birch's beer is the freshness of the brew, and this beer is the same. Impressions are that this is a fall season beer and best enjoyed along with the crisper temperatures of the season. This beer would go well with a pork tenderloin or buttery cheese or a well seasoned ribeye.
