Can, no date:
Pours murky from the can and produces a darker-than-expected brown. There’s a rusty aspect to the body color, compared to a nice mocha tan head. That head is creamy, and lasts a long time, damn near coating the inner wall with a first coat of paint.
Nose a little more highly toasted malt than expected, with just a bit of dark fruit - date/fig. There’s a citrus zest accent and a little dark chocolate. Taste is similar to the nose with the unsweetened chocolate note bullying around the other flavors a bit, including the sweet date note. A dark red wine to tangy raisin impression catches the end to bring a more classic BW feel to the beer. Speaking of feel, this is smooth with low carbonation and just the slightest bit of heat.
Kind of a stout-barleywine hybrid, it might lean a little too much to the former in the end. I still enjoyed the flavors overall.

Can from mid-August 2018 release poured into Kane tulip glass and allowed to warm.
L: 1F tan head with pretty good retention for the ABV. Leaves a nice bit of lacing and a cap and ring. Beer is dark brown, not quite black.
S: Dark fruits, brown sugar, some citrus hoppiness, and roast malts. Not bad.
T: Follows nose, for the most part. Pretty sweet, but stops short of cloying. Dark dried fruitiness nicely on display here. A tiny bit of alcohol heat on finish.
F: Full-bodied, a little bit of carbonation. Surprisingly balanced for a beer that probably should be aged, not too raw at all. Of course, a few years in oak or brandy barrels wouldn't hurt, I think.
O: Think reviewers might not be barleywine fans; this is a pretty nice example of the style and could improve with aging.

Dark brown with almost a purple tint to the body. Barley wines for me are hit or miss and unfortunately this was not my day when I tried it. Aslin brews really good beer and this maybe a good one for the Barely wine drinkers.

Beer is good looking. Very dark brown with purple notes. Pretty nice looking.
Smell and taste are good. Dark fruit notes. Figs and dates like. Light roast notes and hop bitterness. Enough to be noticed but not very strong.
The feel is heavy and thick. Very little carbonation . Smooth body.
Overall, pretty good.
