16 oz can from May 23, 2017. Poured into Teku glass.
L: Dark brown. Light tan 2F head that disappears almost instantly, leaving nothing.
S: Lots of maple, little bit of coffee and some smokiness that I assume is the bacon. Some roasted malts.
T: Maple and coffee up front with a bit of smokiness. Very little of the cocoa or dairy and the light ABV comes off as watery (as it does with the base stout - the first Aslin I ever reviewed). Some roasted malts on back end. Neutral finish. Not sweet.
F: Light to medium body and I think too light for this style. No carbonation to speak of. Construction suffers due to the lightness, balance is fine.
O: What saves it is it tastes good, but it just seems to come out wrong for the style.

Pours like dirty oil sludge from the can. It's harder to tell if Aslin goes for the same turbid look in their dark beers, but since every other beer I've had from them is usually cloudy, I wouldn't put it past them. The head breezes through after growing to only a moderate level. A thin rings is the only lasting part, even a swirls only brings about more bubbles that like to stick to the glass.
The nose does smell like breakfast time at the local IHOP. Maple comes to me first on a fresh glass, but seems to fade slightly and get replaced with the coffee. I can't say I get bacon specifically, but there is a little something in there that adds a general smokiness, light but noticeable.
The beer is not as sweet as I expected, given the initial maple nose. Sure, it is sweeter than your average stout, but it is a milk stout with maple. The first can I had included a hint of sour milk, which I am not getting so much in this second can (and which I am drinking only the first half right now - so maybe the bottom holds that tang). In that first can, I go a smoky note that doesn't quite seem to be from charred malt - so maybe the bacon - upon which the maple and then coffee are layered. In this second can, the maple is a little more up front - and there is a maple gingersnap aspect to the sweet and spice (but not overpoweringly so).
Feel is initially a little warm cola-esque, with faint carbonation. Upon letting the beer warm, it becomes sort of flat, but it also leads to a somewhat silky feel, not a watery one.
This beer is decent enough, especially considering it's a lower ABV beer. I wish the look and feel were a little better, and be really intrigued if the smoke came out a little more consistently in the taste like I noticed early in my first can.
