Padrino is our attempt to capture the bold elements of Italian Espresso. We've added some vanilla to smooth the transition between the rough coffee edge to the sweet Stout body. We also added a twist of Lemon to brighten the beer and tease your senses a bit.

1 November 2020 - Beer #204

Price: $9.99 at Clinton Gourmet Corp. in Manhattan

Appearance: 5 - blackest I've had in a while. Laces beautifully.

Nose: 4 - not much beyond stout. Some vanilla, but no coffee or lemon.

Taste: 5 - yowza! This is tremendous. I do not like fruit in my stouts, but this lemon is perfect. So subtle. The vanilla is the main show. No coffee at all, which is fine by me.

Mouth: 5 - very thick and extremely sticky. Fantastic work.

Overall: 5 - I wasn't even gonna review this one, but I had to. This is fantastic.

Cheers!

Poured a black body with minimal head and lace around glass. Mild aroma of vanilla java with some roasted malts as well. Medium-heavy body with well-hidden booze as a vanilla-coffee espresso profile, along with mild chocolate sweetness, passes over my tongue and this is an easy sipping beer.

L - Pretty much near perfection when it comes to stouts: deep, opaque black with a large dark tan head that sticks around leaving a slight amount of lacing behind
S - Tons of bitter, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Very slight lemon and vanilla notes.
T - Follows the nose: roasted, bitter coffee with rich dark chocolate along with vanilla notes and a slight hint of lemon (noted most in the aftertaste and backend). No hint of alcohol despite 15% ABV.
F - Full bodied with a light to moderate amount of carbonation. Smooth and soft
O - An impressive imperial stout with huge flavors, if a little sweet

Appearance: Pours espresso colored with a thin mocha head that fades to a ringlet; leggy with plenty of spots clumping

Smell: In an effort to mimic an espresso with a twist of lemon, this beer brings forward a strong lemony tone, with the roast and the coffee underneath

Taste: Charred malt and fruity coffee tones forward with the lemon building, through the middle; bold and fruity, through the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: A heavyweight beer, the lemon is a bit overwhelming but the chocolate and vanilla tones are rather hidden

The beer pours pitch black with a quarter inch layer of dark beige crema which forms a ring around the perimeter of the tulip. A thin, oily layer of head rests atop the viscous, obsidian base.

Aromas lead with lactose and coffee. Chocolate and vanilla notes meld together in harmony.

Sweet chocolate tones up front, followed by creamy vanilla flavors. I’m not picking up the lemon character in neither the scent nor flavor.

Medium to full body, soft carbonation.

Overall, this is a good sipping beer. A bit sweet for my preferences, but well done.

Pours a oily pitch black with a small tan head. The aroma is amazing - just like an Italian coffee with notes of sweet vanilla, smooth chocolate, and a hint of lemon. The taste is similar but a little rougher - bitter coffee with less complexity. Still good, but doesn't live up to the nose. You can tell it's a big beer but it drinks very smooth for 15%.

Tasted in a Rastal Teku from a one pint can on March 23, 2019. Padrino is an attempt to capture the bold elements of Italian Espresso. Brewed with vanilla to smooth the transition between the rough coffee edge and the sweet stout body. A twist of lemon was added to brighten the beer and tease the senses.
