Drank on tap at Aslin Beer Company, Alexandria, VA
Served in a snifter
The beer poured a syrupy, viscous, dark brown/black hue with no head. Somewhat murky looking, though a bit lighter in color than anticipated. After each sip, a wall of fine sediment coated the glass.
The aroma was outstanding. Really rich, sweet, boozy and complex. Uber malty and robust. Bourbon notes came through big time. Loads of sweet vanilla too. I definitely picked up on the waffle character. Raw cocoa was also noticeable. Touch of blueberry syrup. There was a subtle oxidative quality as well.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose and nearly as impressive. Super rich and malty. Nice melding of roasted and sweet caramel malts. Big fresh vanilla bean presence. The bourbon kicked in hard as the beer moved almond the palate, but the booze was nicely offset by the sweetness. Bit of a syrupy, berry-like note as well. Some wet cardboard/oxidation was apparent on the back end and the finish, but this mellowed as the beer sat. More booze, roast and sweetness too.
Outstanding rich, syrupy, full-bodied mouthfeel. Super creamy and slick on the palate. The beer contained an ultra fine, subtle effervescence that worked perfectly for the style.
Aslin’s pastry stouts might be insanely pricey, but they are super enjoyable and pack an enormous punch. Furthermore, this beer definitely showcased all the ingredients described on the label. All in all, Portland was a fantastic offering and one that I was very grateful to try on my recent trip to northern Virginia.
