330 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Best before June 2026. Picked this up close to a year ago and has been in the fridge ever since then.

Appearance - Very pale golden straw colored beer with middling haze. A huge plume of nearly three fingers of foamy white head rest on top and linger for a lengthy period. Crazy amounts of spidery lacing.

Smell - Well hopped with lots of grassy notes and some floral aspects. A wee bit of funkiness too.

Taste -Light grassy flavor, some floral aspects and a bit of weedy hops. Light otherwise and yeasty melding with the qualities of a tradition Belgian blonde. Apple shows through as the beer warms

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied with crazy carbonation, very fizzy and finishes pretty dry.

Overall - Pretty tasty, surprisingly light beer that works well without giving off tradition Belgian IPA vibes as this is a modest strength, lacking a bit of the yeasty and hoppy intensity. Still a tasty treaty that works well as a three quarter strength version of the classic.

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Jun 2026 and served slightly chilled. Described as a New England IPA on the label, but Belgian IPA is still technically correct, i.e. the best kind of correct.

Pours clear and effervescent, its pale golden-hued body graced with more than two inches of pillowy, foamy white head that lasts for days. Yeah, that pretty much settles it - we're dealing with a Belgian IPA here. Copious lace deposition, with a lumpy cap and soapy collar lingering on; just a beautiful glass of beer. The aroma is nuanced - hints of this & that, with nothing in particular standing out as particularly potent. Bell peppers, lime zest, apricot and blackcurrant, with suggestions of vanilla, grapefruit, raspberry and spicy, woodsy hops.

I really like this - it's vibrant and refreshing, with a multitude of flavours that interact beautifully together. The malt backbone consists of wheat, grains and crackery sweetness, but it's the hops that supply most of the variety. Lime, grapefruit, peach and melon, with raspberries, black currants and herbal, woodsy hops. Minimal bitterness, with a juicy, citrusy finish leading into a fairly dry aftertaste. Medium-full in body, with assertive carbonation that prickles the palate relentlessly, at least early on in the session; smooth, luxurious & lively mouthfeel that really suits the style.

Final Grade: 4.09, an A-. The flavour profile does show some inspiration from NEIPAs, but everything else about Biere des Amis Cr(h)azy IPA - its nose, mouthfeel and visuals - are much more in tune with Belgian brewing sensibilities. This was a fun twist on one of my favourite styles: no, it's not as attention-grabbing as the bigger Belgian IPAs, but it's still an interesting hybrid that I encourage you to try for yourself. I'd definitely buy this again, if for no other reason than to encourage the LCBO to diversify their Euro import selection, which has stagnated in recent years.

Body is dull straw, hazy, appears to have an almost jelly consistency when swirled, quite unusual, like cooled dashi; forms a fluffy, tall, pure white head with lengthy retention.
Aroma of orange zest, green apple, light
There's a ripe orchard flavour to it, crisp, juicy apple; a slight grassiness; whispers of yuzu, honeydew melon; interesting and hard to pin down; lightly acidic feel, just slightly oily, and a silky full feel of fresh blended fruit; medium body and high carbonation.

A unique flavour profile, bright, fresh, and pure like biting into an apple just picked from a tree.
