Bring back life form. Priority One. All other priorities rescinded. You still don’t understand what you’re dealing with do you? This is an Extra Special Being. British base malts meld rich toasty notes with classic ESB yeast to make this one tough little son-of-a-bitch. East Kent Goldings hops give it floral, herbal, and slightly spicy notes. Wait…this is something we’ve never seen before… It’s dry hopped with a selection of North American hops to provide a hint of tropical fruitiness and citrus. The perfect specimen. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility. Repeat, all other priorities rescinded.

A diificult syle to find in these parts. Bitterness finds the perfect equilibrium here (It is a Bitter and they are of course inherently not so), body follows suit too. Some pine biscuity material and a general crispy clean finish without the crunch. Bench Creek you are a real performer. May be part of the villainous series, but it so very far from Bad. For those of you that fall somewhere between the IPA and Amber area you will not be disappointed! Check this Brew out!!!!

473ml can - the latest in their Villainous Series, and an ode to the android in the first Aliens movie, I do believe. The brew is an Extra Special Bitter.

This beer pours a somewhat hazy, dark apricot amber colour, with four fingers of puffy, rocky, and mildly chunky ecru head, which leaves a decent array of splotchy and sudsy lace around the glass as it slowly but surely sinks out of sight.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, a touch of damp char, some indistinct black stone fruitiness, a hint of earthy yeast, and some leafy, weedy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy cereal malt, a lesser caramel sweetness, some free-range wet ashiness (sorry), still rather muddled dark orchard fruity notes, and more earthy, musty, and floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is average in its palate-coating frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, but for a wee bit of smart-ass bitterness perhaps being a tad too rowdy at this particular juncture. It finishes off-dry, the almost biscuity malt holding the majority of the lingering sway.

Overall - this comes across as an earnest enough rendition of the style, nice and malty, with an appropriate hop off-set. One wonders if androids would enjoy beer (Bender from Futurama sure does), and I might have asked that of the brewery as I blew past Edson last night, and saw the sign, but it was nigh on midnight, unfortunately. Oh well.
