Crowded Castle Brewing Co. "Guilded Kölsch"
$3/6 oz. on tap at the brewery on 16 November 2019
Notes: Appropriate appearance. The head retention and lacing seem to be lacking a bit but I always have to give a little leeway in a bar/tasting room experience as it's difficult to get truly beer clean glasses. The aroma is malty with a touch of fruitiness and just a suggestion of floral/noble hops. The flavor follows, and although it's pretty decent it is a little more malty than you might expect. Part of that has to do with the carbonation which is fairly restrained for the style. It should have the crispness of a Pilsener but this is much more fine-bubble and smooth. The medium-light bodied part of the mouthfeel is alright though, and it's nicely balanced by a firm bitterness that brings it to a mostly dry conclusion. In the end it's not a bad attempt at the Köln style by any means but it could certainly use a little sprucing up around the edges, just a little polish to bet it a little more zippy and bright. They could have called this an American blonde ale and I wouldn't have argued that.
