Crowded Castle Brewing Co. "Mod Quad"
16 fl. oz can without production codes or freshness dating
$23.99/4-pack at the brewery
Notes via stream of consciousness: A rough pour has brought up a two-finger thick head fo tan foam atop a just slightly hazy chestnut brown colored body with gleaming highlights of orange and gold at the base of the glass when held to the light. The aroma offers a combination of dark fruit, Belgian yeast phenols, and caramelish and slightly brown and cocoa-ish malts. The head is dropping before my eyes and I'm wondering why as I've certainly got a beer-clean glass in front of me. It's now just an eight of an inch of creamy foam, and it hasn't really left that much lacing behind. This seems to be an issue at Crowded Castle and although I originally thought that maybe it was because they tend to carbonate everything a little bit lower than standard, I'm now starting to think it's a process issue, maybe in the diatomaceous earth filtration. Or not. Who knows? Back to the aroma, I really like it. It really has that "Quad" aroma with lots of raisin, green banana, some dark caramel that's almost like burnt sugar, and plenty of yeasty spiciness. It's clean and enticing. On to the flavor... well I haven't been let down. I was a little concerned given their penchant for going a little malty on their beers that this would be too sweet but that's not the case here at all. Everything I noted in the aroma remains with some added berry flavor, some more banana, some fig, a hint of orange, and a very light dusting of cocoa powder. Alcohol is present, but no more than you'd actually want. I expect a bit of alcohol to show in a beer like this, and it helps to bring out some of those dried dark fruit flavors, and in combination with a median bitterness it finishes dry with raisin and spice and a touch of banana and orange lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied and slightly dextrinous, and creamy-smooth across the palate. I could live with it if it had a little more zing and bite, but I'm also really happy with the mouthfeel as it is. If that's the trade-off for a limited head (which can also be brought on by higher alcohols) I'm all in. So, to sum up, this one is firing on all cylinders at full speed ahead. It's brilliant. I didn't think I'd be back to Crowded Castle for quite some time but now I'm motivated to get back as soon as possible for more of this before it sells out.
