Crowded Castle Brewing Co. "Koning Gambrinus Pilsner"
$3/6 oz. on tap at the brewery on 16 November 2019
Notes: Slightly hazy golden body beneath a half inch of creamy white foam. The head retention and lacing are limited but I have to give it a pass on that as bar glassware is usually not beer clean, and bartenders don't always build a head. The aroma expresses Pilsner malt backed by lightly floral and "noble" hop notes. It's clean and welcoming, although not as bright or hoppy as it could be. The flavor follows, adding in a kiss of hoppy spiciness, It's balanced by a firm bitterness. and it finishes mainly dry. It's not as bitter and crisp as most of the Pilsners from northern Germany, and reminds me of some of the Pilsners I've had in Ettal, Traunstein, and München. It's medium-light in body with a smooth, fine-bubbled carbonation that then also reminds me of some of the kellerpils I'm had from those same areas, and Austria as well, sans the extra yeast. I think it could use a little bit of polishing to really bring it to be the best it could be, but I've enjoyed it.
