Dead timber is incredibly important to the forest. Fallen trees make up the complex collage of the forest floor and enrich the soil with nutrients. This ale is brewed to have a rich malt body and an earthy aroma that is sure to remind you of hikes through the woods.

a deep autumnal type of red ale here, dense and malty, not overly sweet, and with nice hearty toasted notes, reminds me of changing leaves, layered clothing, gray skies, and october grilling. its got some nice nuttiness, a restrained brown sugar sweetness, a long cooked density and richness, and some protein or something in the body that seems to make this almost healthy feeling to me. i also get red apple, raisin, and toffee. there is a good amount of body here too which sort of extends and slows down the flow of this, but its not too heavy to be a pint beer for me. the sweetness isnt that intense, and there are some hops on the back end to balance, a little pine, but mostly just the standard bittering. there is a woodiness to this that i really like, and i do think its a little more robust and deep than a lot of these, very much a fall beer for me though, and perhaps a bit more than i want in the hot summer weather right now. looks like they do a double version of this too, which has to be approaching barleywine, i need to track that one down too! this is better than its ratings here and one of the better beers these guys have out right now.

Had on tap at Boise Brewing, b:30 and the new taproom over the weekend... Pours a decent enough light amber/red with a pretty decent off white cap and lacing. Nose is light dry toast and even lesser grassy hoppiness... Again, dry toasty maltiness flavor is only an essence because the rest of the standard "beer flavors" (perceived sweetness and hops) are almost entirely missing... Very light body for the style... Watery and that translates to the palate and the aroma... I wish it was better... I will review again once they get their legs under them.

On tap at the brewery, opening night. Dark copper pour, light frothy head. Malt dominates, with some hops that linger and come out, but some acidity dampers the whole thing.
