a simple and classic stout here, i liked it until i tasted the imperial one they make, which i think puts this to shame. this is a little sweeter, and not that light for its low abv. some chocolate malt character almost brown ale type, the roasted darker grain seems lesser to me, like its fuller in feel but not that deep on the grain side, good beer but not anywhere near as compelling as the imperial. i feel like overall quality has really improved in here, and this is objectively solid, but its a bit generic to me, a little thicker than it needs to be, and a touch sweet, i wouldnt want more than one of them on most occasions anyway. no real fermentation character, its just the grain here, subtle molasses and dark chocolate, not quite one dimensional, but relatively simple. maybe a trace of smoke as it warms, raisin too, some lingering sweetness but its nice and smooth at the same time, so a decent trade. they make quite a few good stouts in here, this one seems like the entry point, and i prefer the more robust and ambitious ones, but i have no real complaints either.
