i have to say its been years since ive been in this place, thought they closed or were sold or were still for sale at some arrogantly inflated value, anyway, been turned off by the way this place seemed to kind of become a haven for far right extremism, and it might still be that, but since i was more or less the only one there when i popped in yesterday, its tough saying, but its still a neat location with some great outside space and a nice feel inside, they were gearing up for an oktoberfest celebration this weekend and had a bunch of beers that were new to me, but like i said, its been ages. this is a solid take on vienna lager, less than perfectly clear, which is its only real imperfection, the malt depth is great, its well lagered, and it has some real structure to it, nice for fall, and frankly ahead of expectations. the pour is deep amber in color, definitely a little richer looking than the european standard for these nice head on it from the tap, adequate carbonation, a little unfined looking, but its visually appealing anyway, i was thirsty. nutty in the nose, not as sweet as it kind of looks, but light maple and toffee autumnal character to it, old world lager yeast apparently, and just a bit of caramelization, right on, mellow for its color. the flavor has baked warmth to it, but is dry overall, brassy type minerality as it warms, bran muffin and dark bread, good granola with that honey note, subtle raisin, almond, and brown sugar too, would make a fine morning beer. i like the lager yeast contributing as much as it does to this, and even without proper filtration, this is pretty professional overall. smooth and drinkable but with a fair bit of body as these go, a pleasant fall brew. not sure what the future holds for these guys, or even really whats going on right now, but this beer is thoroughly enjoyable.
