Belgian Dry Hopped DIPA

It's back! Timber Wolf is a fruit forward DIPA with Belgian ester notes in the finish. Starts with lemongrass, orange peel and grapefruit on the nose and finishes with flavours of lemon, lime, orange and apricot as you sip it.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated 12/11/2021 and served barely chilled.

Pours a foggy, brassy amber colour, capped with a full inch of fluffy, soapy white foam that fades within three or four minutes' time. A weaving band of delicate, stringy lace is left in its wake, along with a frothy collar and filmy cap - looks good to me. It smells of bready malts, caramelized sugars and leafy, earthy, vaguely herbal hops - lemongrass, maybe? Decent whiff of ethanol, too.

It's pretty tasty - fruity first and foremost, backed with a robust malt presence. Tastes bready, almost biscuity, with cereal grain sweetness as well as hints of orange, apricot and pink grapefruit developing by mid-sip. The dry hop notes are most noticeable towards the finish - leafy, floral and herbal, with lingering suggestions of lemon & orange peels, as well as a touch of peppery spiciness. Full in body, with middling carbonation levels that add a little bit of prickliness to this brew's smooth, fulfilling, relatively soft mouthfeel. Fair drinkability, given its strength and style - you can tell it's strong, but I wouldn't describe this as boozy, or even all that warming.

Final Grade: 3.72, a B grade. I'll be honest, "Belgian IPA" was not the first thing I thought when I sniffed Timber Wolf, but over the course of the glass I could feel the flavours lining up and falling into place. It's not very bitter, and sweeter than I'd prefer from an IPA, but the dry hop flavours were quite enjoyable. Basically, it's not perfect, but I like more about this beer than I dislike about it. Kind of pricey, but most strong ales are - I'd say this one is worth trying at least once, assuming you have a soft spot for dry hopped Belgian-style stuff.
