473 mL can from the LCBO; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a lightly fogged yellow-gold colour, stirring up one finger of smooth, foamy white head that collapses within two minutes or so. A modest collar of suds lives on, surrounding a few filmy patches on the surface; no lace initially, but there's some deposition as the level drops. Lots of ripe banana and yeasty, clove spiciness on the nose - some white pepper, too, with wheaty, bready malt sweetness and suggestions of orchard fruit.

Bubblegum and ripe banana dominate the profile, buoyed by a decently wheaty, bready background sweetness. Hints of banana bread and apples by mid-sip, with clove/white pepper spiciness developing nearer the finish; more banana & clove/yeastiness linger into the aftertaste, which trends off-dry. Medium-light in body, with aggressive carbonation that remains prickly and biting well into the course of the session; it's a palate scrubber, and at least a little refreshing. Too much banana for my tastes, though.

Final Grade: 3.6, a B grade. Bobcaygeon's Houseboat is alright, but it's one of the more banana & bubblegum-heavy hefes that I've tried in quite some time. Now, I don't mind that ester in small quantities, but when it's a major component, I get real sick of it, real fast. This is a serviceable wheat ale, but lacks the nuance of most German alternatives - meanwhile, common domestic picks such as Side Launch's Wheat also beat it out handily. I wouldn't write this off entirely, but it's not a brew I'd enthusiastically recommend.

Slightly hazed gold, moderate head disappears into nothing. Looks like apple juice. Aroma is gentle banana and cloves. Spritzy mouth feel, sweet malts to start, somewhat dry finish, a touch of metal. Ok, but not super interesting.

taxandbeerguy hits the nail on the head here and there’s not much else to say, Side Launch has probably the best Hefe in Canada, and Houseboat is serviceable, but fairly one note. Bubblegum, clove, banana. On the nose, palate. It’s well carbonated, and I would’ve liked more yeasty flavours and maybe even more unfiltered goodness (seems unfiltered, very lightly though) and maybe even more wheat in the grain bill, but it’s very serviceable. Refreshing and tasty, nothing particularly wrong with it

473 ml can served cold into a weizen glass. LCBO purchase for about $3.50 CDN.

Appearance - Reasonably hazy golden brew, capped with less than a finger of white head that fizzled out in under two minutes.

Smell - Some sweetness, banana trace amount of clove, a bit too sweet, but nothing off-putting.

Taste - Again a touch to sweet of banana, some malty bits and just a hint of clove.

Mouthfeel - Very smooth, slightly creamy, and expressive carbonation.

Overall - Completely serviceable hefe, just lacking some of the magic and depth that the German brews seem to have. It's fine but would prefer Side Launch for sure among those more readily available.
