Honestly not much to look at. Pours up nice, but quickly just turns itself into a glassful of what could be coffee. And nose is just that - some coffee, some chocolate, and - yes - some orange. A touch of alcohol, too. Smells tasty enough. Predominately chocolate to taste, some coffee. Sweet up front, a little bitterness to finish. Drinkable.b

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Bobcaygeon sampler pack from late autumn. Dated 12/10/2022 and served barely chilled.
Pours black like motor oil, briefly supporting an inch of foamy, creamy dark tan-coloured head. Within two or three minutes, it has been reduced to a thin collar and filmy cap, accompanied by a sparse spattering of lace - looks more or less like their original Starry Night. That blast of orange oil on the nose is new, however, deftly countered by a firm note of milk chocolate and cacao; underneath are discernible hints of mocha coffee and raisin bread.
Like the original, it's a tasty stout - the orange is well-handled here, coming off similar to the confection it mimics. Dark chocolate and a touch of citrus acidity at the forefront, followed by flavours of milk chocolate, orange oil, cocoa powder and lactose sweetness. More cocoa & milk chocolate into the back end, with roasted grains and orange fading into a chocolatey aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, oily mouthfeel. Nice to sip this back for a while, but it drinks heavy for only 6% - a tallboy is honestly more than enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Bobcaygeon's Chocolate Orange Stout is pretty good, but it's no masterpiece. I think I prefer the original Starry Night, but then again, I've never cared for the chocolate/orange combo to begin with, so this is an inherent 'subtraction by addition' situation for me. Still, I genuinely enjoyed my glass... well, most of it anyway. Folks who look forward to Terry's chocolate oranges each winter would seem to be the main target, but I say anyone who enjoys sweet/milk stouts should give 'er a go.
