Take in the essence of autumn with Pumpkin Pie-PA, our Pumpkin Spice West Coast IPA.

Infused with the cozy flavors of real pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, this beer offers a twist on the classic West Coast style and adds a nice fall pumpkin spice. There is a balance between the warmth of fall spices and the crisp bitterness of a West Coast IPA, creating a unique and flavorful experience. 28 IBU

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From the University Ave. West LCBO in nearby downtown Windsor. No date stamp or lot number. My 13th beer from the Peterborough, Ontario brewery, and 6th for 2025. Adored by Gracie the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO; no canning date and served barely chilled. Happy Halloween BAs!

Pours a clear copper-orange colour, producing an inch of lumpy, soapy, off white-tinted head that melts away within a couple of minutes. Afterwards, a creamy collar is left surrounding a filmy cap, with a sparse speckling of lace strands scattered onto the glass. Pumpkin spice on the nose, specifically nutmeg and cinnamon; there's also some bready, biscuity malts and caramel sweetness, with a touch of clove. Spicy, herbal, and a little earthy.

Drinks like a pumpkin spice ale for the most part, though the hops do assert themselves later on. Toasted bread, pumpkin pie filling and light caramel sweetness at the forefront, with cinnamon coming early; hints of grapefruit and orange underneath. Nutmeg and clove join the mix by mid-sip, as piney, resiny hop bitterness becomes noticeable amidst the spicy cacophony; resiny, spicy aftertaste with clove and nutmeg both hanging on longer than I'd prefer. Medium in body, with low carbonation that feels limp on the tongue; smooth, relatively flat mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Limited drinkability, but to be fair I feel that way about most pumpkin beers.

Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. You'd think I'd have come across a pumpkin IPA at some point in the past, but I'm 99% sure that Bobcaygeon's is my first. While I have no doubt that they do exist, clearly they're not a popular crossover - and I suspect that's because it's an iffy idea in the first place. What exactly are the cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. supposed to add to a west coast IPA? Ok, sure, spiciness - but why? Pumpkin Pie-PA does not answer that question to my satisfaction - this is one of those mashups where I just don't understand the appeal. Ah well, to each their own... if you enjoy pumpkin beer, it's worth a shot.
