A single hop IPA showcasing the Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand. Intense gooseberry and peach notes on the palate are balanced with vinous grape in this delicious hazy IPA.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their IPA Mix Pack from my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. No date stamp or lot number. My tenth beer from the Peterborough, Ontario brewery, and third for 2025. With Sundae the cat...

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Bobcaygeon's most recent IPA mix pack. No canning date; served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy pale golden colour, producing nearly two fingers of bumpy, foamy white head that lasts for a little over five minutes. A half-inch band of lace is created in the process, alongside a frothy collar and a sudsy cap; lookin' good so far. Subtle aroma of steel cut oats, tropical fruit and some vaguely vinous hop notes; inoffensive, but hardly a compelling demonstration of what Nelson Sauvin is capable of.
The flavours fare somewhat better in that capacity, but it's still not an especially convincing display. It tastes fruity, but muddled, with nothing really standing out - there's a citrusy note reminiscent of sweetened pink grapefruit juice, as well as hints of stone fruit and bready, wheaty malts. Low-level gooseberry & white grape sweetness develops on the back end, with a touch of resinous hops and peach preceding a mildly pithy aftertaste. Medium bodied, with low carbonation that delicately agitates the palate, resulting in a smooth, soft mouthfeel that works well. Easy to knock back, but I'll pass on a refill.
Final Grade: 3.73, an adequate B grade. Bobcaygeon's Fair Winds is too timid for its own good: NS is one of my favourite hops, but I don't think this brew does it justice. That being said, it still tastes OK. I'd guess that this serving is at least four months old, and possibly up to six, based simply on when the mixed pack went into distribution. That's getting old for a pale ale, especially one that has been single-hopped with a delicate variety such as Nelson. If they release another batch in a single can format, I'd totally give this another shot.
