Really couldn’t decide what I wanted at Yard House, but finally settled on Second Chance’s Fool Me Twice. Had tried it before, giving a taster a 3.75 on Untappd at Barrel Republic in Pacific Beach. Really like Second Chance and was looking forward to reviewing another one from scratch. Really knew nothing about this one going in terms of hops, etc. Would be a quick review.
Was a bit dark in there, but poured a pale-to-gold clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy off-white head. Just a few bubbles were coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent foamy layered lacing. World-class consistent foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)
Smelled pine, caramel malts, toffee, hints of cocoa or chocolate, herbal, menthol and maybe Motueka. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste followed the nose for the most part. Very malty. Toffee, caramel, hints of chocolate or cocoa, Motueka?, wood, sappy pine, herbal, menthol and green leaf. Very boozy. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Dry finish. (Feel - 3.50)
This was very good, but not as good as I thought it would be. (Overall - 3.75)

On draught at the brewery – 16oz snifter

Golden orange body. Brass like almost with a honey-amber color to it and some well-conditioned clarity. Dense white mousey topper with some tiny squiggles of lace that crawl across the glass walls. Hop forward nose with citrus zest, grapefruit, pine needle, peach, and apricot that quickly ushers in some caramel malts and lightly toasted grains. A profile that is repeated here in the taste with only some moderate amounts of actual bitterness and a lingering piney aftertaste. Nice fresh fruit character about it with orange zest, grapefruit, and apricot. Fairly clean I would say overall with nice balance and some well tamed alcohol here given the strength.
Not bad at all actually. Again nothing new wave or ground breaking about it but still well-crafted and easy to drink.
