Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Melvin 14-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.19
Purchased: April 27, 2018
Consumed: April 28, 2018
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: Canned on March 27, 2018; Not sure this is the same beer as what is listed on Beer Advocate
Picked this up with five others at Windmill Farms. Thought I had tried it before in some form, but could not see that I had on Untappd (or Beer Advocate). Generally was a big fan of Second Chance, so was excited to try this one. Can description read, “Fruity hop notes from Citra and Mosaic, combined with a hint of real tangerine peel. Create a bright, crushable pale ale. Yes, we said ‘hint’ of tangerine. By design, this brew is well balanced. We don’t hit you over the head with tangerine. This is beer, not a fruit cocktail. We’re focused on brewing great beer for you instead of marketing cute hop rhymes. We simply went with “Clever Hoppy Name” and continued brewing. Would you have it any other way?”
Poured a gold clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy off-white head. Lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Outstanding spiderweb lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.50)
First thing I thought on the first whiff is that it was definitely a XPA. Got tangerine, Citra, mixed berry, floral, lime, lemon zest, buttered white bread and grass. Got the Mosaic from the can. Just a good-smelling old school pale ale. (Smell - 4.00)
Taste wasn’t quite as good as the nose. Got Mosaic up front, though, and the Citra. Also dry grass, pepper, tangerine, bubblegum, mixed berry, floral, bitter citrus rind, lime and lemon zest. (Taste - 3.75)
Light body. Thin-to-oily texture. Average carbonation. Dry finish. (Feel - 4.00)
This was outstanding for a pale ale. (Overall - 4.00)

Brewery describes this a a Rye IPA. It's handsome dark red amber with and adequate foam in the pint shaker. Not much aroma and just a hint of resiny nose. Pleasant spritiness, but also sharp and on the astringent side.
A modest malty sweetness. Then gummy bitterness. The rye flavor just adds to the bitter graininess. I don't think I"m going to give this one a second chance. On tap at Spitz in Hillcrest.
