Our collaboration brew with 14 San Diego breweries in the Summer of 2016 has aged 13 months in bourbon barrels. Brewed to help victims of senseless violence and remind us to live with love, a portion of the proceeds will support Equality Florida and Stonewall Ctizens' Patrol San Diego.

Poured from a thin 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Dark mahogany brown pour... ruby highlights around the edge. 2+ fingers of foamy white head leave great lacing.

S: Sweets and malts mixed with vanilla/booze. Smells like a Scotch ale.

T.F: Semi-sweet... but not as much as expected. Good caramel and toasted grains. Some earthy hops and peat. A whiff of oak and bourbon with some light vanilla. Barrel character was underwhelming. Medium bodied... smooth and sticky. More caramel at the finish.

O: A good but not great BA Scotch Ale. It hits most of the flavors but some more barrel character would have really hit the spot here (and this may simply be my personal preference). Doesn't compare to something like 'Backwoods Bastard'.

Appearance - Pours deep and dark mahogany brown with a tan, half finger's width head. Sub-par retention results in a thin, broken layer of suds with a fair ring encircling the edge of the glass.

Smell - Nice aroma that hits on notes of caramel and butterscotch before bourbon, vanilla and oak take hold.

Taste - Prominent butterscotch taste with lesser chocolate and emerging notes of the bourbon characteristics as the beer rounds it's way into the finish; light and mostly oaky with a touch of vanilla.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with low carbonation. Slick texture that drinks easy before quickly thinning out in the finish.

Overall - Nice BA scotch ale. Hits on just about everything you'd expect, though a little more depth from the barrel would've been nice.

Poured into a Stone flute. Pours a dark orange-red with a thin white head that dissipates into patches with slight lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark stone fruit, red berries, a hint of orange and light, but distinct peat, Flavor of neutral malt, fresh plums, raisins, red berries, hints of dates, mild bourbon and port and a hint of peat. Medium bodied with light creaminess and good carbonation. A mild mannered Scotch ale with good wood barrel notes, but very light bourbon; the barreling flavor leans more towards a fortified wine like Port. This is a nice flavor fit with the fruit components of the Scotch ale, but unexpected from a bourbon barreled ale. The base has a classic flavor for the style and a light peat component. Flavorful base with mild barreling and peat notes. Great cause and worthy collaboration.

Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter
From: Bottlecraft in North Park (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99

Picked this up on my last trip to Bottlecraft North Park. Have generally thought that every single Second Chance beer has been super solid. Saw this one once before, but was $1 (maybe $2) cheaper than the place before. Definitely one of my favorite styles in the barrel-aged scotch ales. Was really looking forward to it. Can read, “Our collaboration brew with 14 San Diego breweries in the Summer of 2016 has aged 13 months in bourbon barrels. Brewed to help victims of senseless violence and remind us to live with love, a portion of the proceeds will support Equality Florida and Stonewall Ctizens' Patrol San Diego.” Unfortunately could not find which other breweries helped out.

Poured a very dark color with two fingers of khaki tan head. A few bubbles could be seen coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled sweet bourbon, earthy leather, woody oak, vanilla, chewy caramel, toffee, butterscotch, chocolate syrup, trash and dark fruits. Smelled very good, but something seemed slightly off. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste followed the nose for the most part. A bit unbalanced really, probably could have used more time. Got boozy bourbon, earthy leather, oaky wood, chewy caramel, toffee, vanilla, butterscotch and trash. A tad bit hot. (Taste - 3.75)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. Best part of the beer by far. (Overall - 4.25)

A bit disappointed overall. Would not have again or recommend it. (Overall - 3.75)

L: Opaque black, no head.

S: Smells like bourbon and only bourbon.

F: Light, watery, crisp, lingering vanilla/bourbon flavor.

O: Bad beer, just tastes like watered down bourbon.
