16 oz tallboy can from a six pack of the six Lester Cup beers (All "pastry stouts") purchased at whistle Punk Brewing for $63. This one is meant to evoke carrot cake, and is brewed with "roasty malts, carrot, cinammon and allspice" and "contains Lactose."
Poured into a Hidden Mother sniffer, this was immediately noteworthy in appearance by having absolutely no head whatsoever. Later, as I worked at drinking it, some determined swirls of the snifter did produce a tiny, spectrally thin khaki colored head, that left a very very small amount of spotty lace. The color of the beer itself is a dark brown that takes on a black look when held up to direct light, as one would expect of a stout.
Initially, all that can be smelled is Allspice. As it warmed, cinnamon came out to play as well, in a big way.
The Taste is a little more complex than the aroma, but not by a whole lot. Carrot is hinted at rather then featured in this beer. The allspice and cinnamon, the ladder especially growing quite bold as it warms, dominate this beer. There's a little bit of a dark fruit flavor as well, along with a very slight vanilla like sweetness.
The body manages to be quite lifeless, no doubt an effect of the beer having virtually no carbonation whatsoever. Nevertheless it is also rather thin and watery in terms of mouthfeel.
This seems like a noble idea that did not work out. I'm hoping the lack of carbonation is an aberration limited just to this beer, and not a harbinger of what I can expect from the rest of this rather expensive 6-pack.
