Knick Nac Pale Attack

one of the more basic beers ive ever had from bellwether, a rye based pale ale, light and relatively tidy, with enough rye in the malt base to be immediately obvious. its slightly bready, off dry, and without anything interesting happening on the yeast side, which is less common for these guys. its nice i suppose to have a pint beer in here among so many small volume sippers, makes sense, especially in this neighborhood, but for me it doesnt have that usual intrigue that sucks me into so many of their creations. there is an obvious freshness to this honey colored brew, off from perfect clarity but close, and with just a patchy half inch of white foam on top. the malt has some sweetness up front, then the rye in the back, both in aroma and flavor, i get an english element too, maybe some maris otter or some light english crystal malt is also present. round medium body, flavorless yeast, and hardly hopped at all it seems for the style, some light herbal bitterness on the swallow is all, a little old school in that sense then, especially considering where pale ale has gone in the northwest, but i liked this a lot, a smooth and easy drinker with enough rye malt to not feel like they played it safe. these guys are a must hit when you visit spokane, one of the most ambitious operations ive come across...
