On tap at Crooked Hammock Brewery, Lewes, DE.
Pours a clear golden color with a minimal and quickly dissipating head.
The nose opens sweetly with notes of honey, a touch of caramelized, melon, honeydew and floral hops. The aromatic spices are subtle but nevertheless hint at flavors to come; leafy, grassy, peppery and citrusy.
The taste opens moderately sweet with a blend of fruity esters and malty notes. Flavors of melon, pear and orange peel interact with cracker and light caramel malts. Yet, as with a good Saison, the overall palate is dry and peppery. In addition, the brewery lists several spicy adjuncts I confess I had to look up, such as galangal root and kaffir lime leaves, as well as lemongrass. These staples of Thai cuisine provided a spice that subtly complimented the natural peppery phenols rather than overpower the general flavor profile. Notes of lemon, lime, pine, lemongrass, and ginger.
Medium bodied and crisp, yet with a smooth carbonation. The finish was nice and dry as per the style.
Very well done Saison with interesting adjuncts that didn’t overwhelm the palate.
