Brewed with the winner of our Homebrew Competition. This Bier de Garde was originally destined as a draught beer, but because of the pandemic it has evolved into the style’s traditional presentation, a bottle conditioned ale. While the translation of Bier de Garde is a “beer for keeping,” we hope you enjoy this beer readily with a group of friends. Don’t be surprised if you feel inspired to do your best William Wallace impersonation after the first sip. FFFRRREEEDDDDOOOOMMM!!!

The appearance of this beer is peculiar. Golden amber (SRM 6-7) at the thin part of a PBGC Sauvin Tulip glass, and dark, purplish amber (SRM 9-11) at the wide part. A tight, one-inch, white head falls to half an inch, then holds for the duration. The beer is foggy, with yeast, showing that only a small amount can go a long way. Lacing is drawn down with each sip.
This is a sweet, fruity version of a Biere de Guarde with modest farmyard funk. The malt is lightly toasted, with peppercorns coming out in the middle. Bright herbal notes follow, with late, wet autumn leaves as it warms.
Each sip starts with strong farmhouse qualities of earthiness and is followed by cellared orchard fruit. Nice, modest sweetness shifts to light bitterness in the finish. Applesauce is evident through the middle, and something is off in the finish, as an acrid, light aspirin flavor spoils the fruit. Extended warmth helps reduce the off flavors from the finish.
A full body and nylon texture. Alcohol is as expected, along with strong, fine carbonation that scrubs residual fat from the tongue.
I suspect people who appreciate earthy wine might similarly enjoy this beer. Unfortunately, the finish is a serious flaw. This beer deserves one's attention while drinking, and goes well with a pungent, fatty cheese. It is definitely a sipping beer.

Look: Cloudy, but transparent. Deep amber - light brown color. A big, frothy head at first pour, that settles to a thin layer of foam. Streams of tiny bubbles rising up alongside the glass. No lacing.
Nose: This beer has a great nose. Honey, pear, red apple, fresh biscuits. It also has an oaky chardonnay white wine thing going on.
Taste: Sweet grains, yellow grape, light pear and red apple, unsweetened black tea with lemon.
Feel: Medium to high level of carbonation. Smooth and soft mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Dry.
Overall: This beer is excellent. It’s a rustic drinking beer. I checked to see my last Bier de Garde. 3 Monts about a year ago. Similar flavors, but this beer is less sweet and offers some more complexity. So, I like it quite a bit more.
