Brewed just like in Cologne: German Pilsner and Wheat Malts, German Magnum hops for bittering, Hallertauer hops for aroma and a spicy note.

Pours a nice golden straw with a slight hint of orange that is translucent. It has a slightly sweet aroma and taste and a nice malt taste, and the hops are quite mild. It has a medium head that stays for a while, A very good Kolsch. Rated 5-30-2021

Abundant foam on the clear yellow brew in the goblet. Spritzy but a little thickish in the mouth. The aroma is mild and grainy with a whiff of green hoppiness, and not exactly the perfumey Kölsch note. Still, this tastes something like a German Kölsch, which is more than you can say about a lot of the beers you encounter in this category. It does taste rather sweet, more like a Helles Oktoberfest, but I'm not complaining. Whatever this is, it's an excellent and quaffable light beer. From the 16 oz can purchased at Town & Country market. Dated 11/15/24.

Name: Zoigl-Kolsch
Brewery: Zoilghaus Brewing
Location: Portland, OR
Style: Kolsch
ABV: 4.9%

For this sunny evening in Idaho, I chose the Zoigl-Kolsch, a uniquely lighter choice. Its captivating pour revealed a frothy, airy head that dissipated slowly, leaving a generous amount of lacing on the glass. The beer's light straw hue, a solid two on the color charts, was accentuated by its crystal clear appearance, lively carbonation bubbles, and a few yeast floaties. This intriguing start for a light beer is visually appealing, hinting at a unique taste and aroma bound to pique your curiosity.
As I swirled the glass, the aromas unfolded in a surprising sequence. A malty sweetness, a light floral ester, and a delicate fruity note greeted my senses. This Zoigl-Kolsch defies expectations with its unique nose, straying from the typical Kolsch aromas. The absence of the expected hop spiciness is a delightful twist. These aromas, while not conforming to the style guidelines, keep you engaged with their unexpected nature.
Kolschs are a personal favorite, but this one is a puzzle to categorize. It boasts a significant malty sweetness with a hint of fruitiness. The hops are a delightful blend of floral, citrus, soft yet spicy, and grassy. The malts bring to mind light-toasted bread and crackers. As I finish sipping, a faint phenol note, reminiscent of banana and clove, lingers on my palate, likely due to the unique yeast strain.
The Zoigl-Kolsch's mouthfeel is unique. It has a slight astringency, which adds a pleasant dryness to the beer. The finish is crisp, leaving a refreshing sensation on the palate. The body is medium-light, providing a balanced weight to the beer, and it has medium carbonation, which enhances the beer's liveliness.
I like the unexpected sweetness, but after I sipped on this for a while, I felt the beer needed drier. I wanted a crisper beer with more crackers and less malty sweetness. Nonetheless, it is a refreshing beer on a sunny night in Idaho.

This delightful kolsch pours an unfiltered golden straw color with a fluffy yet minimal white head. This beer GLOWS in the glass. The nose includes a bounty of floral fruity notes, freshly cut grass, some white bread, and a bit of cereal grain. Very nice.
The taste leans hard to the floral fruity flavors and the rich grassy flavor, which lends a bit of spice to the taste mid-palate, but this beer is well balanced by the bread and cereal grain flavors. Truly a magnificent balance between the myriad components.
The mouthfeel is bright and crisp, making for a refreshing beer. This is exceptionally well executed, IMHO.

I had always had it in my mind that kolschs are supposed to be clear, but I've had several now where that very much does not hold true, so maybe I just had the wrong impression. This is of that latter group, where it is quite opaque. Beautiful pile of pillowy white foam though that plays against the hazy golden yellow body to create a really lovely visual experience. Lacing is more mild than I'd expected based on the head.
Nose is sweet and somewhat tart and there's a round earthy/yeasty character underlying it. Huh. ...not really what I was expecting, TBH. There's definite notes of honey (actually a lot of honey the more I dig) and some light floral character and grassiness. If I didn't know better I'd think this was brewed with a shit tonne of honey.
Flavour brings forth straw grains, some grassiness, and some of the same honey impression, but without the sweet. In fact it's very dry across the middle. Fluffy fresh baked white bread, earthy honey character, some grassiness, and a light spice to the finish.
Body is nonexistent, but the carbonation is aggressive. This is a really interesting brew that I find myself developing a more positive feeling towards the further into the glass I get. Like I said, I'm not super well versed in the world of kolsch, but this is not quite what I had expected. But, again, I like it! There's complexity and intrigue here that I can get behind.

Look: Slightly cloudy straw yellow with a foamy white head that rises and slowly puckers down to a lid, leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Wet straw, floral hops, fresh baked bread, honey, and warm biscuits
Taste: Biscuits and straw kick it off and soon after, a slow-building floral takeover happens with notes of madrone, Japanese skimmia, and holly amongst them. Bready malt notes and honey interplay throughout as well and finally closes with a light honey-like sweet note and more floral hops
Mouthfeel: Light but full, medium-high carbonation, very clean throughout, and clean and crisp on the finish
Overall: Another Zoigl, another winner. These folks can do no wrong in my book (and experience) and as a Kolsch sucker, I hadn’t had this in a while nor reviewed it so the 19.2oz. stovepipe can was beckoning the moment I laid eyes on it. A nice traditional-tasting Kolsch with nice malt and floral hops on display along with a great feel and refreshing finish. Recommended and please, Zoilghaus, put this in sixers too

Pours a light yellow, with a little opacity - an off-white head that quickly collapses, and minimal lacing. The aroma is malty and grassy; there's noticeable grass in the taste as well, with a hint of offsetting bitterness from the noble hops. Clean finish with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Overall, this is a decent example of a to-style Kölsch - I only wish I had been able to try a fresher example of it to be able to note more of its complexity.

Pours clear and yellow, not much color on this beer at all. The fine bubbles that make up the head fade quickly.
Musty hay scent, yup smells like a Kolsch!
Taste has a bit of hay and barely malt, but not much on the malt end but ever so slightly sweet. This beer isn't supposed to be robust and packed with flavor but the flavor that it does give is consistent and quite nice. Pleasant drinking experience.
Really easy drinking and pretty much does everything I've been told a Kolsch is supposed to do! Definitely not a beer to sit down and contemplate but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

Faintly cloud, some sediment on the bottom. Light carbonation quickly fading head leaving a skim coating. Malty aromas, little beer-y, not distinguished. Taste is light, clean and refreshing. Good for a summer's evening meal. Nothing special, just an enjoyable German ale. Very sessionable- lift a liter! Prost!
