Black lagers are a prized rarity in German brewing. Originating from the middle of Germany their incredible balance of light body and captivating flavor is hard to beat.
Our multiple award-winning German-style Black Lager is something special as well. Zoigl-Black is brewed with German malts, yeast and hops in accordance with German tradition. The combination of lightly sweet malts with a kiss of dark malt provides the flavor and color that make this beer so tantalizing.

This beer pours a clear dark brown with a reddish tinge and a small off-white head. The aroma is sweet roasted malt and light chocolate. The flavor is the same as aroma with a slight bitterness and caramel. This is one of the best black lagers I've had and is comparable to its German counterpart. Purchased last week at Safeway Hazeldell. BOD 10-16-2023, been on the shelf for a while. 24 IBUs Rated 5-29-2024

6x12oz. cans purchased from Lifesource Natural Grocers in Salem OR.
$12.99
Pours a dark brown (not black) body with a lovely looking tan head.
Malty nose. Sweetish toffee malts, some grassy hop in there also. Pleasant.
Taste again dominated by the soft sweet malts. Some chocolate and cocoa powder. And again, some noble type hops in the end to try balance. NO ashiness.
Lovely softer mouth feels but it's very easy to put down.
An excellent darker lager. But to me not a Schwarzbier. More a dark helles!

Enjoyed on tap.
This is malty and rich, pouring the color of a nitro cold brew cappuccino. Coffee, cocoa, and chocolate nibs. I thought it was well done over all.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew pint glass. Pours a lightly hazy, dark reddish orange with a half finger light khaki head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of lightly toasted biscuit malt, brown bread, light coffee and cocoa. Flavor follows, with toasted biscuit malt, toasted brown bread crust, coffee and light bakers chocolate. Flavor thins off into the finish, but leaves an unexpected lingering toasted dark bread aftertaste. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A well made domestic version of a schwarzbier, authentic tasting with some satisfying coffee and chocolate notes. The tapering off of the malt flavor in the taste is redeemed by the quite pleasant aftertaste. This brewery is doing a great job with genuine tasting German styles, and it's nice to have this one which is uncommon these days.

Look: Brown to black on the pour and deep amber when held to light with a foamy cream-colored head that holds as a lid and leaving good lacing behind
Aroma: Warm brown bread, dark malt notes, wafts of chocolate and roast, some light floral hop notes, and toasted cereal grains
Taste: Chocolate malt and rich, bready malt kick it off and develop in depth as some roast and toasted grains follows close behind. As the initial malt hit tapers off, light floral hop notes come through and intermingle some before rich dark malt and chocolate return to close it out
Mouthfeel: Full but light feeling, very clean throughout, medium-high carbonation, and a clean and slightly crisp finish
Overall: Simply put, this is outstanding. I’m a sucker for the all-too-rare black lagers and Schwarzbiers and surprisingly had never scored nor even tried these folks’, even more odd since I love what they do with their overall portfolio. A rich, tasty, malty, light chocolate/roast, and clean lager that is extremely well-made and a great American representation of a Schwarz. Since finishing the first can of my sixer, I’ve already been plotting to buy more. Highly recommended and prost!

12-ounce can purchased from the New Seasons Market near Orenco Station. Poured into an English-style tulip half pint glass. Date stamp: "Canned on 02/19/2021 Batch #1021 Back in Black"
Look:
Zoigl-Black has a translucent dark brown body with amber highlights. A somewhat energetic pour raises a finger-high head of thick tan foam which dissipates in a few minutes and leaves patchy lacing.
Smell:
Clean lager aroma enhanced by rich malt with notes of coffee, toasted dark brown bread, and milk chocolate.
Taste:
Closely follows the nose. Starts with dark roasted malt and coffee, which transitions to lighter, more bready malt. The middle is mildly sweet and nutty, with flavors of chocolate and a touch of caramel. A firm earthy bitterness leads into a drying finish.
Feel:
The beer is medium-bodied with a smooth texture and moderate carbonation.
Overall:
Every brew I've had from Zoiglhaus over the past couple years has increased my respect for them, and Zoigl-Black is no exception. It starts with good roasty flavor and segues into soft, dark malts. Crisp, satisfying, and not too sweet. Recommended. If you see it, try it.
