500 mL bottle graciously gifted by the head brewer/owners of Transplants Brewing. Served in a half-pint tumbler. Couldn't find a bottling date.
Look:
Light burnished gold with a faint haze and a rocky head of bright white foam. The head quickly shrinks to a ring at the edges of the glass, and doesn't leave much lacing.
Smell:
Warm sweet potato pie in a glass! Yammy, earthy, gently spicy, with a bit of bready malt standing in for the pie crust. Some marshmallow in there too. No hops at all, and only a hint of thyme as the beer warms.
Taste:
Follows the nose closely. Starts with flavors of sweet potato pie filling on top of soft malt. Sweet but far from cloying, with well integrated spices that are prominent but not aggressive. The beer dries out through the middle and takes on a savory earthy character. Notes of ginger, cinnamon, vanilla cream. No bitterness. Spices linger in the aftertaste.
Feel:
Medium-bodied with a smooth texture. Tiny bubbles provide brisk carbonation.
Overall:
The label describes this beer as a "sweet potato ale with nutmeg and thyme." On paper, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it. In my glass, however, I have no such concerns. Ocarina of Thyme is really nice, and I would be happy to drink it again.
