On draught. This from a batch labeled 5.8% ABV.
A dark copper/mahogany pour with a clarity and a decent head. The thin collar that forms produces some intricate lacing up top.
Toasted earthy malt and graininess on the nose and palate. Mild fruity esters, toasted nuts and hints of caramel. An enjoyable leafy hops bitterness, and finish that fades to dry.

A very good English Brown Ale.

Poured from the can into a nonik pint glass. Listed on the can as a Northern English Style Brown Ale.

Frothy reaching light tan colored head of three fingers, even more so on the cascading pour, but does settle nicely lower. Creamy rich looking top, sitting on a real nice gleaming browned metallic shiny copper color. Quite nice clarity to this up close actually, but very dark as well. Real gorgeous looking brown ale.

The aroma is not amazing, but just simply good. Light hints of cream and a good simple nutty quality. Faint hints of bready brown bread crust, but not terribly. Slight sweetness, and no hop aroma. Just solid and good.

The palate is just slightly hinting at what could be great. First hit as a muted and slightly wet feel, consisting of light touches of nutty malt and faint milky chocolate. More toast like action comes but is weakened by a watery backbone a bit. There is touches of light cream on the finish, and even some husky nut quality that kicks in nicely. The aftertaste is probably the highlight as the flavors manage a slower build up, but doesn't quite linger unfortunately either.

There's some real nice hints of brown ale goodness, but it just isn't making it's way out. Still enjoyable though for sure.

On the label it says "Brewed in the Southern English Style" so I don't know why it's listed as an American Brown. I'll respect the brewery's wishes and rate it to that style.
Slightly hazy amber, nice white head, good retention, rings of lace
Smells mostly of pit-fruit esters, some richer malt in the background
Lots of caramel malt, some toast, some apricot or plum type flavor as well
Fairly light bodied but rich, carbonation is light but appropriate
If they marketed this as a pale mild, it would be spot on. As listed and as labeled, it's far off the mark. My score is generous.

16oz can into a nucleated pint glass.

Look: Pours a murky light amber with a thin white head of tight bubbles that leaves spotty lacing on the side of the glass.
Smell: Toffee, very lightly roasted malt, slight brown sugar and bread.
Taste: Caramel/toffee, toasty dark biscuit malt, mild bitterness on the finish.
Feel: On the thin side of medium bodied, tiny bubbles, fairly high carbonation.
Overall: A good brown ale, if you're in the mood for something relatively light. Good balance, sweet and bitter by turns but not too much of either.
